Parenting Tips: Vomiting and diarrhea are very common problems in young children. However, parents often panic in this situation. Most parents wonder what to feed their children and what to avoid when they have vomiting or diarrhea, so that they recover quickly. Pediatrician Sarita Sharma shared a video on this topic on her Instagram handle. In this video, the doctor shared some important and easy tips. Let's learn more about this in detail:

What not to feed?
The pediatrician says that when a child has vomiting, diarrhea, fever, stomach infection, or viral gastroenteritis, some seemingly normal foods can worsen the condition. In this situation, it is important to completely avoid certain foods, such as:
Fried and oily food
Foods like chips, pakoras, and burgers are difficult to digest. They can increase vomiting and stomach cramps.
Spicy food
Pickles, spicy curries, and spicy vegetables further irritate an already sensitive stomach.
Dairy products
Milk, milkshakes, and heavy yogurt can initially worsen vomiting and diarrhea, especially in viral gastroenteritis.
Sweet drinks or excessive sugar
Chocolate, store-bought juices, and soft drinks can increase dehydration instead of hydrating the body.
Gas-producing foods
Foods like kidney beans, chickpeas, cabbage, and corn can cause bloating and discomfort.
Heavy or raw food
Apart from all these, raw salads, very heavy bread and vegetables, or red meat also put pressure on the child's stomach at this time, so avoid them.
According to Dr. Sarita, at such times, it is best to give the child light, easily digestible, and hydrating food. For example:
ORS
The doctor says that ORS is the best way to prevent dehydration. Give the child small sips of ORS frequently.
Coconut water
This provides the body with instant hydration and electrolytes.
Plain Khichdi (rice and lentil porridge)
Khichdi is light, nutritious, and easy to digest. It is the best food for sick children.
Curd and rice
Some children tolerate curd well, and it soothes the intestines.
Boiled potatoes
You can give your child boiled potatoes. This provides them with light carbohydrates that are easy on the stomach.
Banana
Bananas give the child energy, are easy to digest, and are considered beneficial for diarrhea.
These light, hydrating, and easily digestible foods speed up the child's recovery. However, remember not to give the child everything at once; give them small amounts of food and drink frequently. Avoid giving very hot or very cold substances. If the child shows lethargy, has reduced urination, or if vomiting and diarrhea worsen significantly, it is essential to consult a doctor.
