We may be in a bit of a drought when it comes to Star Wars-themed games right now, but that could be about to change if a prominent leaker is to be believed.
According to MP1st reporter Krakasis, fans can expect a 'big Star Wars game' to be announced, and it's supposed to be happening 'very soon'. According to the report, the announcement has nothing to do with either Star Wars: Zero Company or Eclipse, which are two Star Wars games we already know about.
Kurakasis has previous for getting the names of unannounced games right ahead of announcement. They previously correctly predicted the subtitle of Machine Games' Indiana Jones game ahead of time, as well as the subtitle for the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy movie.
While a new Star Wars game is an exciting prospect in its own right, the leaker brought new information to light over the weekend that got fans of BioWare's classic RPG excited. According to Kurakasis, the title of the upcoming game will end with 'The Old Republic'.
The Old Republic refers to an era of the Star Wars universe that takes place thousands of years before the events of the original trilogy. It's a time when the Jedi and Sith were in constant battle with one another, making it a great setting for new games and movies as it's almost completely divorced from the modern Disney canon.
There have been three major titles set during The Old Republic already, with BioWare releasing two RPG titles in 2003 and 2004 respectively - long before its Mass Effect days. EA also went on to publish an MMO set during the time period, which was considered a decent success during its heyday.
The original Knights of the Old Republic game is considered such a cult classic that a remake of it is supposed to be on the way from Saber Interactive. It was first announced in September 2021 as part of a PlayStation Showcase event, but has since entered a troubled development with it receiving an indefinite delay during 2022.
Despite this, there are still a few other Star Wars games on the horizon to look forward to. EA will launch Zero Company, a turn-based tactics game set during the height of the Clone Wars, sometime in 2026.
A narrative-based Star Wars game is also on the way from Quantic Dream in the form of Eclipse. However, this is also yet to receive a concrete release date.
It's also widely known that Respawn Entertainment is working on a third instalment in the Jedi game series with the last entry launching back in 2023. A recent statement from the developer said: "Within the Star Wars universe, we're excited to keep building new stories - with the next chapter of the Star Wars Jedi series aiming to raise the bar again for storytelling and gameplay."
There's currently no release date for Respawn's next Jedi game, either.
If a new Star Wars game set during the Old Republic is indeed on the way, we'll likely find out sooner rather than later. The Game Awards take place on Thursday, December 11 - we'll no doubt be keeping our eyes peeled for glimpses of lightsabers all evening.
