New Delhi: The world’s most influential industrialist Elon Musk is once again at the center of controversies. This time the matter is about the huge fine imposed by the European Union on his social media company X. The EU has imposed a penalty of approximately €120 million (about $140 million) on X, after which Musk reacted sharply and raised questions on the structure of the European Union itself. This matter has increasingly become a subject of international debate.
This move by the European Commission has created a stir in the tech world, because this is the first time that a big tech platform has faced such a major action under the Digital Services Act (DSA). At the same time, Musk claims that this step is politically motivated and the EU’s bureaucratic attitude attacks free expression.
Why was X fined €120 million?
EU has imposed this penalty under the Digital Services Act (DSA). According to the Commission, X provided misleading information to users regarding its Blue Checkmark system and did not provide necessary data to researchers. The blue tick is currently given only to premium subscribers of X, which the EU described as deceptive design and lack of advertising transparency.
Regulators said this model puts users at risk of manipulation and fraud. This decision is being considered historic, because for the first time DSA has been used against a big tech company. This investigation began in December 2023 and progressed further when Musk became a close advisor to President Donald Trump. European digital head Hanna Veerakkunen said it took time because our teams wanted to make sure we had a strong legal foundation.
Elon Musk’s sharp reaction on the fine
Immediately after the fine was announced, Musk took aim at the EU on X and appealed to member states to take back their sovereignty. Musk wrote that the European Union should be abolished, and sovereignty returned to individual countries, so that governments can better represent their people.
US Vice President JD Vance
The matter also resonated in international politics. US Vice President JD Vance criticized the EU, saying that the EU should support freedom of expression, not attack American companies over waste. The relationship between Vance and Musk is considered very good. Musk has been among the major donors of Trump’s campaign and he also created the Department of Government Efficiency.
What is the European Union?
The European Union is an organization of 27 countries, which include Germany, France, Spain and Belgium. It is one of the largest political-economic blocks in the world. All member countries together decide policies through the European Council and the European Parliament.
X को मिले 60 दिन… नहीं मानने पर और भी भारी जुर्माना
This action by the EU is part of a broader crackdown on tech companies. Apple, Meta and Google have also faced strict action in recent years. The Commission said that X has been given 60 days to present the solution and 90 days to implement the reforms. Otherwise the company may have to face even bigger fines.
