Singer Kumar Sanu has taken legal action against his ex-wife Rita Bhattacharya filing a defamation case in the Bombay High Court. The singer is seeking Rs 30 lakh in compensation claiming that his reputation has been harmed due to statements made by Rita in multiple interviews. He has also requested that these interviews which allegedly contain defamatory remarks be removed. The court heard the petition on December 17. What are the allegations? According to the petition Rita Bhattacharya accused Kumar Sanu of mistreating her during her pregnancy. She claimed that she was starved locked in the kitchen and denied medical care. These allegations if proven true could have serious implications for the singer’s public image. Kumar Sanu’s lawyer Sana Raees Khan stated in the petition that these claims violate the divorce agreement signed between the couple. The agreement recorded at the Bandra Family Court on February 9 2001 explicitly mentions that neither party is allowed to make accusations against the other in the future. Who is Rita Bhattacharya? Rita Bhattacharya is the first wife of Bollywood singer Kumar Sanu. Married in the late 1980s the couple had three sons together—Jiko Jassi and singer Jaan Kumar Sanu—before their divorce in 1994. Following the separation she raised their children as a single mother. In late 2025 she gained renewed media attention for giving several interviews in which she detailed claims of emotional neglect and infidelity during her marriage to Sanu. About Kumar Sanus personal life Kumar Sanu had previously been in a relationship with actress and Bigg Boss 19 contestant Kunickaa Sadanand. While the two were involved romantically they never married and later parted ways. Kunickaa has publicly discussed her relationship with Kumar Sanu in interviews and on the reality show Bigg Boss 19. However this relationship is separate from the legal dispute with Rita Bhattacharya. More on the legal matter The Bombay High Court has taken note of the petition and further hearings will determine whether the singer’s claims of defamation are valid. The case highlights the complex nature of personal disputes spilling into the public domain especially when interviews and media coverage are involved. Kumar Sanu is seeking both financial compensation and the removal of the interviews to protect his reputation.
