A recent study named the best supermarket cheddar cheese, and one store's own-brand product took the first-place prize. Consumer group Which? Conducted the test, which involved cheese lovers who tried and rated cheddars from various supermarkets and brands. Mature cheddar is one of the most popular cheeses in the UK as it is used for a lot of things, such as a cheesy lasagne, a scrumptious baked potato or a simple cheese on toast.

But some mature cheddars are better than others, according to this recent study. Which? conducts this test every year, and the results are different from those in 2024. The cheese tasters were asked to rate each mature cheddar based on taste, aroma, look and texture. Taste was worth 50% of each cheese's final score, while aroma was worth 20%, and appearance and texture both 15%. The results spoke clearly, and one supermarket had the best mature cheddar.

The winner was Waitrose's Davidstow Cornish Mature Cheddar, which gained a final score of 77%. The cheese is on the more expensive end of the scale, priced at £5.75 for 550g.

Which? revealed that most teasters felt this cheese had "just the right smoothness and creaminess, as well as perfect saltiness."

"Two-thirds of our tasters said the strength of flavour was just right, and the same proportion were satisfied with this cheddar's crumbliness," they added. Waitrose beat out some stiff competition in this list.

Just behind it in second place is M&S Cornish Cove Mature Cheddar (£6.50 for 550g), which scored slightly lower with 76%. Following that in third place is Aldi Specially Selected West Country Mature Cheddar Cheese (£3.39 for 350g), which scored 74%.

The study also revealed: "None of the major cheese brands were at the top of the table, but Castello and Davidstow were the best of the runners-up. Cathedral City was the least enjoyed, while Pilgrims Choice was the joint-least liked."

Cheddar is found in many British homes, especially around Christmas time, when cheese is a big part of celebrations. The study saw all the cheddars blind-tasted in September 2025 at the consumer group's specialist test lab.

More than 7kg of mature cheddar was put to the taste test by a panel of 64 people. People didn't know which brand they were sampling, so the results were truly honest. You can view the full results of the study here.
