The month of December is a time of celebrations all over the world. Families gather to exchange gifts, decorate and celebrate. But do you know that in many countries December 25 is a normal day? In some places, Christmas is not celebrated due to religious, cultural or political reasons. Here we will discuss about five such countries where there is no special celebration on Christmas.

1. North Korea

North Korea- The government maintains tight control over religion in North Korea. Celebrating religious festivals like Christmas is completely prohibited here. Worship of the Kim family is promoted and holidays of other religions are not recognized. Celebrating Christmas can result in severe punishment. People celebrate leader’s birth anniversary or other government festivals here in December.

2. Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia- Saudi Arabia is the birthplace of Islam and Islamic rules are very strict here. It is illegal to celebrate Christmas or put up decorations in public. The government considers it against Islamic traditions. Foreigners may celebrate a little in private, but are prohibited from doing so in public. Muslim festivals like Eid are celebrated with great pomp here.


3.Brunei

brunei- Brunei is a small but prosperous Muslim country. There is a ban on public Christmas celebrations here since 2015. Wearing a Santa hat, putting up a Christmas tree or singing songs is considered a crime. Its objective is to protect the Muslim population from being misled. Non-Muslims can celebrate quietly at home, but are prohibited from doing so outside. The punishment can be up to five years in jail.

4. Somalia

Somalia- Most people in Somalia are Muslim and the government has completely banned Christmas. It is considered against Islam and public celebration is considered a security threat. Celebrating Christmas can result in severe punishment. People celebrate their religious festivals here.


5. Tajikistan

Tajikistan- The government limits foreign culture in Tajikistan. There is a ban on public Christmas decorations, school parties or Christmas trees. Its aim is to preserve its local traditions. Some people celebrate privately, but it is forbidden to do so in public.
