Heart attack: Know its signs and first aid

Heart attack can happen suddenly to any person, and in this situation the first few minutes are extremely important. Steps taken at the right time can reduce damage to the heart and even save lives.

According to Dr. Gajinder Kumar Goyal, Clinical Director, Cardiology Program, Marengo Asia Hospitals, Faridabad, it is important for everyone to know what to do during a heart attack.

Recognize the warning signs of a heart attack

According to Dr. Goyal, recognizing the symptoms of heart attack is the first and most important step. Chest tightness, pain that spreads to the jaw, shoulders, neck, back or arms, cold sweat, shortness of breath, dizziness, vomiting or weakness are its main signs. As soon as such symptoms appear, emergency services should be called immediately.

importance of golden hour

According to experts, the first 60 minutes after a heart attack are called the ‘golden hour’. Getting treatment during this time can largely prevent damage to the heart muscle. Therefore, it is necessary to reach the nearest hospital, where complete heart attack facilities are available.

first aid until help arrives

Keep the patient calm and in a sitting position until the ambulance arrives. Pay attention to his breathing and pulse. If there is any medicine given by the doctor, help in taking it. According to Dr. Goyal, if one is not allergic to aspirin, chewing one tablet can thin the blood.

How to do CPR in case of unconsciousness

If the patient becomes unconscious and is not breathing normally, begin hands-only CPR immediately. Place your hand in the middle of the chest and give fast and strong pressure. 100 to 120 compressions should be given per minute. Continue this process until help arrives or the patient’s breathing becomes normal.

If you suspect a heart attack

If a person suspects a heart attack, call emergency immediately. Avoid driving yourself to the hospital, as this may increase the risk. According to Dr. Goyal, chewing aspirin tablets can help in protecting the heart muscle.
