Are you also bothered by your old and awkward Gmail username? Often, we create such IDs during our college or school days that later become a source of embarrassment in our professional lives. Until now, there was no direct way to change it, but that's about to change. According to recent reports, Google may introduce a feature in 2026 that will allow you to change your Gmail address without creating a new account.
What is the new update?
Typically, a Google account is linked to your email address. Until now, if you wanted to change your email ID, you had to create a new account and abandon your old data. However, a recent report by 9to5Google revealed that Google has updated its Hindi support page. It mentions an upcoming system that will allow users to change their Gmail addresses. Most importantly, none of your data or old emails will be deleted in this process.
How will this feature work?
According to Google's support page, this feature will be rolled out gradually. You will have the option to choose a new Gmail address. As soon as you create the new address, your old email address will function as an 'alias'. You will be able to log in using either your new or old address. Google has clarified that messages and data associated with the old address will remain safe.
You can only change your Gmail address once a year
Although this feature is very useful, Google has also set some strict rules for it. You will only be able to change your Gmail address once every 12 months. You can change your address a total of only 3 times. Therefore, whenever this feature arrives, you will have to choose your new username very carefully.
When will the feature be available?
Currently, this feature is not yet live, but its appearance in the support documents indicates that the company is working on it. It is expected that this feature may be launched globally by 2026. This will be a great relief for those who have been stuck with their old email IDs for years.
