Three women were stabbed on the metro in Paris, France, on Boxing Day. The incident took place on the Ligne 3 (line three) of the metro between 4.15pm and 4.45pm local time (3.15pm and 3.45pm GMT), local transport operator RATP said.
The stabbing attacks happened at the Arts-et-Métiers, République and Opéra stations, French news outlet BFMTV wrote. Following the incident, the metro service was temporarily suspended between Republique and Gallieni, RATP said around 3.12pm GMT. This, it said on X, was "due to the intervention of law enforcement forces".
Two of the women injured were treated at the scene by firefighters before being taken to hospital. A third woman took herself to hospital and reported being stabbed on Ligne 3.
None of the women are believed to have reported life-threatening injuries.
The suspect reportedly fled the scene following the attacks.
A probe for attempted murder and aggravated assault with weapon has been launched, being led by the regional transport security service (SRT) with the support of the Val-d'Oise police force.
A 25-year-old man was arrested later on Boxing Day in the Val-d'Oise department, the prosecutor's office said.
The Minister of the Interior, Laurent Nunez, took to X following the arrest, writing: "I congratulate the investigators and police officers of the regional transport police of the @prefpolice who identified and then apprehended, along with the #ValdOise police officers, the alleged perpetrator of the knife attacks committed in the Parisian metro this afternoon, particularly thanks to the video surveillance camera network and their exceptional knowledge of the terrain."
The Police Prefect office also issued a statement on X, reading: "Thanks to the immediate action of the investigators from the Regional Transport Security of the @prefpolice , supported by the Val-d'Oise police officers, the suspected individual has been apprehended.
"I extend all my wishes for a prompt recovery to the 3 victims who were slightly injured and taken in charge by the emergency services, whom I also salute. Thank you to all the law enforcement forces engaged in this intervention for their reactivity and mobilization."
