Dhurandhar directed by Aditya Dhar blends fact and fiction to tell the gripping tale of Rehman Dakait a notorious figure in Pakistan’s Lyari region during the early 2000s. While the film is fictionalized it is inspired by the real events that unfolded in the violent gangland of Karachi. Akshaye Khanna plays the role of Rehman Dakait bringing to life a character who has been both feared and misunderstood. The movie’s portrayal of this real-life gangster has sparked conversations with some praising its representation while others question the accuracy of its depiction. A significant voice in this conversation comes from Habib Jan Baloch a close friend of the real Rehman Dakait. Habib Jan Baloch’s reaction to Dhurandhar In a video widely shared on social media Habib Jan Baloch a lawyer and Baloch nationalist shared his thoughts on how Dhurandhar portrayed his long-time friend Rehman Dakait. He revealed that he had watched the film twice and had mixed feelings about it. While he acknowledged that films often take creative liberties he was grateful for Bollywoods portrayal of Rehman. Baloch expressed his gratitude saying “I won’t talk about the character. This is what happens in films. Had there been a few more songs it would have been better. But I need to say that what Pakistan failed to do India’s Bollywood did. Thank you Bollywood!” Despite his appreciation for the film’s efforts Baloch disagreed with the movie’s portrayal of Rehman Dakait as a villain. According to him Rehman was a hero not a criminal. He further explained “He was a hero a good man. Pakistan is indebted to him. Had Rehman and Uzair Baloch not been there then Pakistan’s face would have been like Bangladesh today or even worse.” The legacy of Rehman Dakait Baloch emphasized that the film was not an attack on any political party despite some criticisms from members of Pakistan’s People’s Party. They have objected to the way Dhurandhar portrays their party in an unflattering light. However Baloch believes that the film in its essence is not politically driven. He insists that Dhurandhar accurately reflects a period in Lyari’s violent past which needed to be showcased.
