Tricolor jersey… Why did Pakistan ban its Kabaddi player?

Pakistan has banned its international Kabaddi player Ubaidullah Rajput indefinitely. Ubaidullah Rajput played for the Indian team in a private tournament in Bahrain earlier this month. He wore the Indian tricolor jersey, whose pictures went viral on social media and created an uproar in Pakistan. Pakistan Kabaddi Federation (PKF) hastily called a meeting on Saturday (27 December) and banned Ubaidullah.

PKF said Ubaidullah was found guilty of traveling abroad to play in the tournament without obtaining NOC from the federation or other relevant authorities. Federation Secretary Rana Sarwar said that Ubaidullah can appeal before the disciplinary committee. On the other hand, Ubaidullah has said that whatever happened happened due to misunderstanding. Ubaidullah claimed that he did not know that he was playing for the Indian team.

‘Ubaidullah had wrapped the tricolor’

The PKF secretary said the federation took serious note of the fact that Ubaidullah not only traveled abroad without an NOC, but also represented an Indian team, wore its jersey and on one occasion draped the tricolor around his shoulders after winning a match. Sarwar said, “But he (Ubaidullah) has claimed that it was a complete misunderstanding and he was not told that the team he would play for in this private tournament would be the Indian team but still he is guilty of violating NOC rules.”

Videos and pictures of Ubaidullah wearing the Indian jersey and waving the tricolor during the GCC Cup went viral on social media, after which he landed in trouble. Sarwar said that other players have also been banned and fined for participating in this competition without taking NOC. Ubaidullah had earlier apologized and said that he was invited to participate in the competition played in Bahrain and he was part of a private team.

He said, “But I later came to know that they had named the team as ‘Indian team’. I told the organizers not to use the names of India and Pakistan. In the past, Indian and Pakistani players have played together for private teams in private competitions but the names of those teams were not Indian or Pakistani teams. I was given wrong information.’
