Fast Food Habits Cause Disease: Recently, the death of an 11th-grade student was blamed on fast food consumption. Let's explore the truth behind this.

Can Pizza and Burgers Be Life-Threatening? A shocking case has emerged from Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, where the death of a 16-year-old girl has been linked to fast food. Several reports claimed that her death was due to consuming pizza and burgers. However, several doctors have challenged this claim and come forward to clarify the medical facts related to intestinal perforation. Let's explore whether eating pizza and burgers can actually cause death, and what doctors have to say on this matter.

Can eating pizza and burgers really cause death?

Dr. Rahul Chawla (Consultant, IBS Hospital, Lajpat Nagar) challenged the pizza and burger theory behind the 16-year-old girl's death and explained the real cause. Following the girl's death, several reports claimed that junk food, including chow mein, burgers, and Maggi, contributed to her death. This theory spread rapidly. Reports also stated that she had been suffering from stomach pain for several months. When the student died despite treatment at AIIMS, Delhi, people believed these reports, sparking debate. However, in an Instagram post on December 25th, Dr. Chawla addressed the matter.

What did the doctor say?

In his video, Dr. Chawla explained that ultra-processed foods have long-term effects on our metabolism, but their effects are not as sudden as this. He said, "The death of a 16-year-old girl at AIIMS is certainly a serious warning about fast food. Pizza and pasta can have long-term effects on your digestive system. Ultra-processed foods are harmful to metabolic health and can cause many digestive problems, but they don't cause such sudden intestinal perforation."

These could be the reasons.

According to Dr. Chawla, the medical reasons for such cases are usually quite complex and often require immediate surgery. According to him, there can be three main reasons behind this:

Typhoid or tuberculosis are common diseases in this region. If not treated promptly, they can cause ulcers in the intestines, leading to intestinal perforation.

Mesenteric ischemia –  This is a condition in which the blood supply to the intestines is reduced or cut off. This can lead to damage to the intestinal tissue and its decay.

Unseen problems –  Long-term stomach pain often indicates a chronic underlying condition, rather than a problem caused by a single meal.

Dr. Chawla explained, "In most cases, the girl may have had typhoid or tuberculosis, which caused the intestinal perforation. Another cause could be mesenteric ischemia, which means the blood supply to the intestines is cut off, causing the intestines to deteriorate. In all these situations, immediate surgery is necessary, and in rare cases, it can even prove fatal. If abdominal tuberculosis or typhoid becomes severe, treatment is crucial. Failure to receive timely treatment can lead to various complications, including a perforation of the intestine."
