Africa is home to numerous stunning destinations that are perfect for some winter sun. Many people will consider Morocco and Egypt as among their ideal tourist destinations. However, there is one stunning island that might just be equally as good. Mauritius, located 2,000 kilometres off the southeastern coast of East Africa, is renowned for its gorgeous sandy beaches, crystal-clear blue waters and year-round sunshine, with temperatures reaching up to 31C in January.
The beautiful island has been named the 26th safest destination in the world and the safest in Africa, on the Global Peace Index.
The beautiful island's low crime rate, political stability, and favourable economic climate have led it to be recognised as the most peaceful country in Africa for the 18th consecutive year.
The Global Peace Index report reads: "Mauritius's political stability improved in the past year following a smooth transition of power after the opposition's landslide victory. The peaceful handover reinforced democratic institutions, while steady economic growth and a strong tourism sector further supported stability."
In 2024, Mauritius welcomed nearly two million visitors, and the island's tourism appeal continues to rise. There are so many factors that draw travellers to the island, including the fact that it is almost entirely surrounded by a massive coral reef system, providing the perfect conditions for watersport activities such as snorkelling, swimming and diving.
The sandy white beaches that accompany the blue lagoons provide the perfect spot for sunbathers to make the most of the warm sunshine.
And for those who enjoy adventure, the island is home to several rainforests, waterfalls and mountain peaks, where a hike through the diverse landscapes will allow you to explore the island's remarkable views and see wildlife up close.
Black River Gorges National Park boasts more than 50km of walking trails, including the highest point, Black River Peak, while animal lovers might want to head over to Bras d'Eau National Park, which is home to rare animals including geckos and tropical birds.
Holidaymakers can book direct flights to Port Louis, Mauritius, from London Gatwick Airport.
