Aadhaar Card Scam Prevention: UIDAI Shares 5 Security Tips Every Citizen Must Follow

Aadhaar has become one of the most essential identity documents in India—whether for banking, telecom services, government benefits, travel, education, or everyday KYC verification. Because it holds sensitive personal and biometric information, its security remains a top priority. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) continues to strengthen digital protection measures and frequently issues advisories to help citizens safeguard their data.

Recently, UIDAI introduced a new and improved Aadhaar app with enhanced features that reduce the need to carry a physical Aadhaar card everywhere. Alongside the launch, UIDAI shared an important awareness message on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle. The authority has recommended five crucial security practices that users should follow to avoid scams, identity theft, and misuse of their personal information.

If Aadhaar data falls into the wrong hands, cybercriminals can attempt frauds involving bank accounts, SIM cards, online transactions, or illegal identity usage. Therefore, it is extremely important for every Aadhaar holder to be alert and proactive about security. Here are the key steps UIDAI advises:

1️⃣ Never Share Your Aadhaar OTP With Anyone

UIDAI strictly instructs users not to share Aadhaar-linked OTPs under any circumstance.
The OTP acts as a security shield for identity verification. Without it, no one can access or update Aadhaar details. Scammers often try to trick people by posing as bank agents, telecom operators, or government representatives. Remember:

👉 OTP is confidential
👉 UIDAI or any official agency never asks for your OTP

Keeping it private ensures that your personal and financial information remains protected.

2️⃣ Use Masked Aadhaar for Verification

A safer alternative to sharing full Aadhaar details is using the Masked Aadhaar option, available via the official UIDAI app and website.
This version hides the first 8 digits of the Aadhaar number, showing only the last 4 digits. It is accepted for hotel check-ins, SIM purchases, and other identity verifications.

Masked Aadhaar reduces the risk of full number exposure and protects users from unauthorized access to personal data.

3️⃣ Avoid Uploading Aadhaar Online or on Social Media

Sharing Aadhaar photos or screenshots on public platforms increases the risk of cyber fraud.
Many online scams start when criminals collect identity documents shared carelessly on the internet. UIDAI advises every citizen to:

✔ Keep Aadhaar private
✔ Avoid sharing on social media, messaging groups, or public forums
✔ Provide details only when necessary and to trusted organizations

4️⃣ Enable Biometric Locking for Extra Protection

Users can secure their fingerprints and iris data by turning on Aadhaar Biometric Locking through the official app or UIDAI website.
Once locked, nobody can use your biometric information for authentication until you manually unlock it.

This feature is extremely useful if you suspect misuse or want maximum security for your identity and access rights.

5️⃣ Contact Official Helplines in Case of Fraud

If you notice suspicious activities related to your Aadhaar or experience any attempted scam, immediately report it to UIDAI or cybercrime authorities.
Quick action can prevent losses and stop further misuse of your identity.

Official helpline numbers:
📞 Cyber Crime Helpline: 1930
📞 UIDAI Helpdesk: 1947

You can also file complaints online at the National Cyber Crime Portal.

Stay Alert, Stay Secure

Aadhaar enables access to several important services—and that’s exactly why cybercriminals target it. By following UIDAI’s recommended security measures and staying cautious about sharing personal information, users can enjoy a safer and more secure digital experience.

It only takes a few minutes to set up these protections, but they can save you from major financial or identity fraud risks in the future.
