Anjel Chakma was attacked in Dehradun's Selaqui market on December 9th after protesting racist remarks. Five accused have been arrested in the case. Tripura student Anjel Chakma was murdered for speaking out against racist remarks. Six young men attacked Chakma with knives and brass knuckles. He was brutally beaten to death and was in the hospital for 14 days. He subsequently died during treatment. His medical report has now been released. According to the medical report, Chakma suffered bleeding in the brain. In addition to a head injury, he suffered deep wounds on several parts of his arms and legs. He also suffered severe spinal cord damage, resulting in loss of movement on the right side of his body. CM Dhami spoke to Chakma's father Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami spoke to Angel Chakma's father, Tarun Prasad Chakma, on Monday and expressed his condolences. The CM assured strict action against all those involved in the murder. Angel's father serves in the Border Security Force. CM Dhami said that five of the accused have already been arrested. One accused fled to Nepal The accused have been identified as 22-year-old Suraj Khawas and five of his friends. Suraj is originally from Manipur and currently living in Dehradun. CM Dhami stated that one of the accused is suspected to have fled to Nepal, and efforts are underway to apprehend him. A reward has been announced for information leading to his arrest. These men attacked Angel in the Selaqui market on December 9. Angel was with his brother Michael when the attack occurred. Angel's father said the attackers made racist comments towards him. Rahul Gandhi targeted the BJP Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, called the student's murder a "horrific hate crime" and alleged that the ruling BJP has "normalized" hatred. Rahul Gandhi wrote on the social media platform X, "What happened to Angel Chakma and her brother Michael in Dehradun is a horrific hate crime. Hate doesn't develop overnight. For years, it has been instilled daily, especially among our youth, through toxic content and irresponsible discourse. And it is being normalized by the hate-mongering leadership of the ruling BJP." He added, "India is a country of respect and unity, not fear and abuse. Ours is a country of love and diversity. We must not become a dead society that turns a blind eye to the targeting of fellow Indians. We must reflect and confront what we are allowing our country to become."
