Mumbai. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the death of four people after being hit by a BEST bus in Mumbai’s Bhandup area on Monday night. Along with this, the CM announced financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the deceased.
Four killed, 9 injured in accident
A police official said that four people died and nine others were injured after being hit by a bus in Bhandup area. The police officer said that three women were among the dead. He said that the injured have been admitted to a nearby hospital. The official said that the bus driver has been detained and the process of registering an FIR against him is being initiated.
Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) Public Relations Officer Sucheta Utale said in a message that the accident occurred outside Bhandup (West) railway station at around 10.05 pm. He said that at the time of the accident, BEST employee Santosh Ramesh Sawant (52) was driving the bus, while Bhagwan Bhau Ghare (47) was on duty as a conductor.
Meanwhile, a senior municipal corporation official, on condition of anonymity, told PTI that the accident occurred when the bus was being moved backwards outside Bhandup (West) railway station. Fadnavis expressed grief over the accident and announced financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of those killed in it.
In a post on social media platform ‘X’, he described the incident as “extremely unfortunate” and paid emotional tribute to the deceased. The Chief Minister said, “The state government will provide financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh each to the legal heirs of the deceased.”
Meanwhile, Congress Mumbai unit president and Lok Sabha member Varsha Gaikwad has demanded an investigation into the accident. “It is very sad,” he said. Bad buses, untrained drivers and an administration reluctant to invest in improving ‘BEST’ are putting many lives at risk every day. We demand a thorough investigation into this incident.”
PM Modi expressed grief over Bhandup bus accident
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed grief over the tragic bus accident that took place in Bhandup, Mumbai. Taking to social media, Modi said, “I am saddened by the loss of life and property in the accident in Bhandup, Mumbai. My condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured get well soon.” According to media reports, bus driver Santosh Sawant has been taken into custody and the cause of the accident is being investigated.
