The solar sector has contributed a total of 35 GW.
2025 has proved to be a historic year for the Indian renewable energy sector. New electricity capacity added to the grid this year has reached an all-time high. Although the final figures will come in early January 2026, in just 11 months of 2025, the country's green energy production has reached 44.5 gigawatt (GW), which also includes large hydro projects. Solar power has made the biggest contribution to this growth. In the year 2024, this figure was about 28.7 GW, which also included large hydro power generation.
Renewable energy capacity (excluding large hydro) has increased by 26% to 204 GW in 2025, as of 30 November 2025. This increase recorded in 11 months is more than the 21% growth seen in the entire 2024. Because of this, the total renewable energy capacity (except large hydro) has increased from 134 GW by 31 December 2023 to 204 GW by November 2025. Solar power is still at the forefront of India's clean energy growth. In the 11 months of 2025, the solar sector added a total of 35 GW capacity to the grid, while in 2024 this figure was 25 GW.
These are the top states
Of the 35 GW of solar added in 2025, about 26 GW will come from ground-mounted solar, 7 GW from rooftop solar, about 1 GW from hybrid projects, while the remaining capacity will come from off-grid solar. Rajasthan (36 GW), Gujarat (25 GW), Maharashtra (17 GW) and Tamil Nadu (12 GW) are the top states in terms of solar power capacity.
Growth in wind power sector also
Between January and November 2025, the wind power sector added about 6 GW of new capacity, which is the highest in recent years. It is clear from this that this sector is making a strong comeback after the sluggish phase. India's total installed renewable energy capacity is expected to reach 254 GW by November 2025. This includes solar 133 GW, wind 54 GW, bioenergy 11 GW, small hydro 5 GW and large hydro 50 GW (including pumped storage). This information is based on the data of the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
Affordable and beneficial technology
According to IEEFA, about 135 GW of additional renewable capacity is in various stages of construction or tender process. Electricity rates still remain very competitive. Record low bids for utility-scale solar are coming in between ₹2.44 to ₹2.55 per unit (about $2931 per MWh), showing that clean energy technologies are still affordable and profitable.
