There is a mythological story of this holy city. According to the story, in mythological times there was a demon named Gayasur. He had performed rigorous penance for Lord Brahma and had pleased him. Then Lord Brahma gave a boon to Gayasur that whoever sees him, all his sins will be destroyed and he will go straight to heaven. Because of this boon, even sinners started attaining salvation.

Lord Vishnu asked for Gayasur's body

Due to this the rules of the world started deteriorating. Then the gods prayed to Lord Shri Hari Vishnu, the sustainer of the world, after which Shri Hari Vishnu asked for the huge body of Gayasur as donation for the Yagya. Gayasur agreed to donate his body. After this Lord Vishnu pressed his body with his mace. Then Gayasur's body turned into a huge stone. Lord Vishnu was extremely pleased with his devotion.

Special importance of Pind Daan in Gaya

Shri Hari Vishnu gave a boon to Gayasur. He said that whoever performs Shraddha of his ancestors at this place, his ancestors will directly attain salvation. Gaya area is said to be the abode of Lord Vishnu. Here he is seated in the form of a mace. It is said that when Pind Daan is offered here, Narayana himself accepts it and grants ultimate salvation to the souls.
