UP Weather Update: Uttar Pradesh is currently facing one of the harshest winter phases of the season, with a widespread cold wave and dense fog affecting daily life across the state. Over the last 24 hours, night temperatures have dropped below 10 degrees Celsius in at least 17 districts, intensifying cold conditions and reducing visibility in many areas. The changing weather pattern has prompted authorities to issue alerts and advisories to ensure public safety and preparedness.

Up weather update

Cold Wave Intensifies Across Multiple Districts

The persistent cold wave has significantly lowered temperatures across large parts of Uttar Pradesh. Several districts are witnessing chilling nights accompanied by cold daytime conditions, making it difficult for residents to carry out routine activities. The sharp dip in temperature is being felt more strongly in both urban and rural regions, where early mornings and late evenings are particularly harsh.

Cities and towns such as Kanpur, Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Prayagraj, Basti, Banda, Hamirpur, Bareilly, and Etawah are experiencing intense cold conditions. In these areas, people have resorted to additional protective measures such as layered clothing, bonfires, and reduced outdoor movement, especially during nighttime and early morning hours.

Dense Fog Disrupts Visibility and Transportation

Along with the cold wave, dense to very dense fog has become a major concern across the state. Reduced visibility during early morning hours has disrupted road, rail, and air transport in several districts. Commuters are facing delays, and drivers are being advised to exercise extreme caution while traveling.

In response to these conditions, the Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for dense fog in many districts, including Lucknow, Kanpur, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Agra, Meerut, Noida, Gorakhpur, Basti, Gonda, Bahraich, Lakhimpur Kheri, Ayodhya, Bareilly, and Shahjahanpur. The alert indicates the need for heightened awareness, as foggy conditions may continue to pose risks over the coming days.

Western Disturbance Behind the Weather Shift

Meteorological experts have attributed the severe cold and foggy conditions to an active western disturbance influencing the western Himalayan region. This atmospheric system has allowed cold winds to flow into the plains of northern India, leading to falling temperatures and moisture accumulation near the surface, which results in fog formation.

As a result, districts such as Deoria, Kushinagar, Maharajganj, Siddharth Nagar, and Gorakhpur are likely to continue experiencing cold wave conditions. These areas may see prolonged cold spells, particularly during nighttime, until the weather system weakens or shifts.

Rain Likely to Bring Partial Relief on New Year’s Day

There is some relief in sight as weather officials have forecast light to moderate rainfall in the northwestern parts of Uttar Pradesh on New Year’s Day, January 1. Another approaching western disturbance is expected to influence weather conditions, potentially reducing fog intensity in some regions.

The rainfall may help slightly increase temperatures by around 3 to 5 degrees Celsius in many districts. While this rise may not completely eliminate the cold, it could offer temporary relief from the biting chill and improve visibility levels in fog-prone areas.

Advisory for Residents and Travelers

Authorities are urging residents to stay updated with weather advisories and take necessary precautions. People are advised to limit unnecessary travel during early morning and late-night hours, use fog lights while driving, and keep themselves adequately protected from cold-related health issues.

As the New Year begins, Uttar Pradesh continues to navigate challenging winter conditions. With careful planning, awareness, and adherence to advisories, residents can reduce risks and adapt safely to the evolving weather pattern.
