Shatrunjay Hill situated in Palitana, Gujarat is considered as ‘Siddha Kshetra’. There are more than 863 to 900 small and big temples built by carving stones here. These temples made of white marble present a wonderful example of architecture. It is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites for Jain followers, where the first Tirthankara, Lord Rishabhdev, performed penance.

The biggest feature of this mountain is that it is called the ‘City of Gods’. Climbing the stairs here and visiting these temples is considered the door to salvation but as soon as the sun starts setting, the atmosphere of this entire area changes completely. This mountain, which is buzzing with the crowd of devotees throughout the day, becomes completely deserted in the evening.

Why is there silence as the sun sets?

There is a deep religious and spiritual reason behind the silence on Shatrunjaya Hill after sunset. In Jainism, ‘non-violence’ is considered supreme. According to beliefs, microbes and insects become more active at night. To avoid killing any living being even unknowingly in the dark, it is strictly prohibited to stay here at night.

rules and traditions

  • After the evening aarti, all the priests and devotees have to descend the mountain. It is considered to be the ‘abode of the gods’ only at night.
  • It is prohibited to eat or carry anything on this sacred mountain. Devotees go up after fasting from below.
  • Palitana has been declared the world’s first official vegetarian city, where the sale of meat and eggs is completely banned.

Major temples and architecture

The most important temple here is of Lord Adinath. The construction of temples started from the 11th century and was made grander from generation to generation. The carving is so fine that by looking at it one can gauge the superiority of ancient Indian craftsmanship.
