Desk: Indian automobile companies have agreed to the upcoming new fuel efficiency rules. These new rules are known as CAFE III (Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency) and are set to come into effect from April 1, 2027. The main objective of these rules is to reduce CO₂ (carbon dioxide) emitted from vehicles and increase fuel economy.
Let us tell you, SIAM (Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers), an organization to the auto industry, has supported these new rules. SIAM President Shailesh Chandra said that these rules are balanced and will help in making vehicles more fuel-efficient and better for the environment in the times to come.
According to ET report, most companies agree with these rules. Although some companies had talked about creating a separate category for small cars, but in the new draft policy, the rules have already been made a little easier for small vehicles and more strict for big vehicles. Therefore many companies feel that there is no need for further changes.

A senior government official said that the final rules of CAFE III can be released soon. Under these rules, companies will have to gradually reduce the CO₂ emissions of their vehicles every year till 2031-32. In this draft, electric and strong hybrid vehicles have been given more benefits. This means that the government wants to promote these types of vehicles so that pollution can be reduced.
The interesting thing is that no company demanded to extend the date of implementation of these rules. It is clear from this that the industry is ready for these changes. SIAM said that it was not easy to reach a consensus among more than 20 companies, because everyone’s vehicles and technology are different. Nevertheless, through negotiations and compromises, everyone reached a consensus. Overall, these new rules are being considered a big step towards a clean and better future in India.
