One of the most renowned gardeners in the UK, Adam Frost, is also one of the most recognisable. For decades, Adam, 56, has been guiding Britons through the wonderful world of gardening, sharing advice on what they can do to ensure their gardens are in the best possible shape.

Alongside this, Adam has become a successful presenter on BBC Gardeners' World, where he shares those pieces of advice to a large audience.

Appearing on the Talking Gardens podcast, Adam opened up about his entry into the world of televisual gardening, as well as his relationship with the Chelsea Flower Show. He explained how he convinced his wife to let him take part to show off his skills as a garden designer, but that she gave him one condition.

Adam first met his wife Sulinain the 1990s, when she was working as a manager at John Lewis. Together they have four children.

The star recalled: "We were building a national rose garden at St Albans and I somehow convinced Mrs Frost, because we turned over a lot of money.

"We didn't have a lot of money. I had an £18,000 retention, so they were holding back £18,000, I somehow convinced her to spend the £18,000 on a Chelsea garden. She didn't laugh or smile, but in the end she just went, 'If you need to go and do it, go and do it, but just make sure it's good'."

On his entry into the world television, Adam said it happened naturally, but he still had a desire to return to the prestigious garden event at Chelsea. However, he was worried about doing so because of the potential impact on his relationship with his wife.

He said: "And then yeah, that sort of rolled and I suppose in reality, we still self-funded, probably, the first three gardens at Chelsea, and then I started to get a little bit of interest, then we kept picking up those little gold things [medals].

"And even at the end, the tele wasn't something that I was necessarily going to do. I did quite a lot in the industry, so I'd do a lot of talking.

"It sort of just naturally sort of happened really. I did my last Chelsea in 2015, promised Mrs Frost that I wouldn't do anymore, partly because I think she was going to divorce me at that point."

This isn't the first time Adam has talked about his wife and her views on some of his career decisions.

Last year, when he was being interviewed by Zoe Ball about gardening tips, he talked about how Sulina would occasionally watch him on Gardeners' World to skip to the parts featuring their dog Buster.

He said: "I cannot think of anything worse than sitting down on a Friday night and watching me walk out and say 'Hello and welcome to Gardener's World.'

"Mrs Frost watches occasionally because obviously we've got a new dog. So Buster has become the star of the show, and she's been fast forwarding my bits just to get to the Buster bits. She says 'Buster was really good.'"
