WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature that could let users generate AI-generated summaries of their unread messages. This feature will make it easier for users to catch up on multiple conversations at once. According to a report by WABetaInfo, the feature, which is currently under development, was spotted in the latest iOS TestFlight beta update and is also being explored for Android. It aims to provide a quicker way to understand ongoing chats without opening each conversation individually, while maintaining user privacy through Meta’s processing system.

The feature, referred to as “summarize unread chats,” is not yet available for beta testing, but early details suggest it will be integrated directly into the chat inbox, the report claims. This would allow users to view a consolidated summary of unread messages across multiple chats in one place.

How WhatsApp AI summaries for unread messages feature work

WhatsApp is developing a feature to help users manage unread messages more efficiently. Instead of opening chats one by one, users can tap a dedicated option to generate a summary of key points from multiple conversations. This builds on an existing capability that allows users in certain regions to summarise messages in a single chat.

The summaries are expected to be powered by Meta AI and processed using a system called Private Processing. This ensures that message content remains secure during the summarisation process. According to the details shared, the system processes data in an isolated environment and does not store messages or link them back to users.

Private Processing is based on confidential computing and uses encryption along with techniques such as Oblivious HTTP to prevent data tracking or interception. The feature is optional and will only work when users enable AI tools within the app settings.

One key aspect of this feature is the ability to handle multiple chats at once. Currently, generating summaries for individual conversations requires separate actions, which can be time-consuming when there are many unread messages. The upcoming update is expected to introduce a single entry point in the inbox that aggregates summaries across chats, improving usability.

WhatsApp is continuing to develop this feature on both Android and iOS. Once ready, the company is expected to roll it out to beta testers before a wider release. The addition of AI-generated summaries reflects WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to integrate AI tools into messaging while addressing privacy and data security concerns.
