Sunrisers Hyderabad pulled off one of the most electrifying chases in IPL history, storming past a daunting 244-run target to defeat Mumbai Indians by six wickets at the Wankhede Stadium.
Just when it seemed Ryan Rickelton had scripted a memorable win for Mumbai with a breathtaking unbeaten 123 off 55 balls, Hyderabad responded with even greater firepower. They chased down 244 in just 18.4 overs, finishing at a staggering 249/4 with a run rate of 13.34.
The foundation of the chase was laid by a blistering opening partnership between Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head. Abhishek smashed 45 off 24 balls, while Head unleashed a stunning assault, hammering 76 off just 30 deliveries, including eight sixes. The duo tore into the MI bowling attack, powering SRH to 92 in the powerplay and immediately shifting the pressure.
Head’s explosive innings ended when he was dismissed by Hardik Pandya, but by then the chase was firmly in Hyderabad’s control. A brief wobble followed when AM Ghazanfar struck twice in quick succession, removing Abhishek and Ishan Kishan, who fell for a duck.
However, Heinrich Klaasen ensured there would be no collapse. The South African star remained unbeaten on 65 off 30 balls, blending power with composure. He found support from Nitish Kumar Reddy (21), before Salil Arora delivered the finishing flourish with a quickfire 30 off 10 balls, sealing the victory with eight balls to spare.
Despite posting a massive total, Mumbai’s bowlers endured a forgettable outing. Jasprit Bumrah went wicketless and conceded 54 runs, while Trent Boult and Pandya picked up one wicket each. Ghazanfar was the pick with two wickets, but none could stem the relentless SRH onslaught.
Earlier in the evening, Rickelton delivered a career-defining knock to power Mumbai Indians to 243/5. He built on a strong start provided by Will Jacks, who scored a rapid 46 off 22 balls.
Rickelton then took charge, turning the innings into a showcase of clean hitting. Suryakumar Yadav had a brief stay, scoring just 5 before falling to Eshan Malinga, caught by Abhishek Sharma. Naman Dhir added 22, while Pandya contributed a brisk 31 off 15.
Rickelton’s century—his maiden in the IPL—came in style, as he reached the milestone with a powerful pull shot and celebrated with visible emotion. He continued to dominate, smashing bowlers to all parts and lifting Mumbai to what seemed a match-winning total.
For SRH, Praful Hinge picked up two wickets but was expensive, while Sakib Hussain and Nitish Kumar Reddy chipped in with one each. Pat Cummins went wicketless despite bowling key overs.
In the field, Klaasen was involved in two dismissals, while Abhishek Sharma and Harsh Dubey contributed with crucial catches.
In the end, however, it was Hyderabad’s fearless batting display—led by Head and Klaasen—that overshadowed Rickelton’s brilliance, turning a high-scoring contest into a historic run chase.
