Urban Cost Crisis: In today's times, rising inflation and the soaring cost of living have made life difficult for the middle class, and traditional comforts are gradually becoming scarce.
Urban Cost Crisis: In this current era of high inflation, even covering the expenses of daily life is becoming a heavy burden for a middle-class family. Conveniences that were once considered standard—such as raising a large family, running a household on a single income, or caring for the elderly—are now, one by one, becoming increasingly difficult for the average person to manage.
Recently, a viral post by Sanyam Sharma—a former Research Lead at Evalueserve and a former analyst at CRISIL—has sparked a major discussion regarding this very issue. He suggests that over the next 5 to 7 years, rising inflation and the escalating cost of living could completely transform the lifestyle of the urban middle class in India.
1. Families Are Shrinking
In the past, it was common for a single couple to have 7 or 8 children; however, today, even raising more than one child is becoming a challenge. Sharma notes that for middle-class families, raising a second child is becoming significantly more expensive than it used to be, as the costs associated with education, private tutoring, healthcare, and other necessities are rising at a rapid pace.
This is the reason why many young couples are now choosing to have only one child. In major cities, the fees for private schools and the expenses for children's extracurricular activities have risen so steeply that shouldering the responsibility of raising multiple children is no longer an easy task for many families.
2. Running a Household on a Single Income Has Become Difficult
In the past, it was common in many families for one member to earn while the other managed the household; however, the situation today is quite different.
Rent
Home Loan EMIs
Electricity and Water Bills
Increased Daily Expenses
Given all these factors, it has now become essential for both partners to earn an income. Particularly in major cities, managing a household solely on a salaried income has become an extremely difficult endeavor.
3. Increasing Pressure on Elderly Care
Sharma also noted that parents should no longer assume that their children will be able to provide them with complete financial support in the future. This is because, in today's times, the younger generation is already burdened by the costs of their own children's education and the high cost of living. Consequently, bearing the expenses of elderly parents could become a significant challenge for many. This is precisely why people are now placing greater emphasis on retirement planning.
4. Hiring Domestic Help Could Become Expensive
The costs for domestic help—such as maids, plumbers, electricians, and other service providers—are also rising steadily. Following the pandemic, the demand for these services has surged, while the availability of workers remains limited. This imbalance has had a direct impact on their wages.
5. The Changing Lifestyle of the Middle Class
It is evident that rising inflation is not merely increasing expenses; it is also transforming the lifestyle of the middle class. Smaller families, dual-income households, more robust retirement planning, and limited domestic assistance may well become the "new normal." In the times to come, the Indian middle class may have to make significant adjustments to their priorities and spending habits.
