Alphonse Areola’s wife, Marrion Valette, has unleashed a fierce online tirade against managers Nuno Espirito Santo and Graham Potter following West Ham United’s relegation from the Premier League. Valette publicly held the two coaches accountable for the club’s downfall and suggested that their handling of her husband at the London Stadium cost him a place in France’s World Cup squad.
West Ham relegated to the Championship
West Ham’s proud 14-year stay in the Premier League came to a crushing end on the final day of the season. Even though the Hammers registered a convincing 3-0 win over Leeds United, they were relegated after Tottenham Hotspur’s 1-0 victory against Everton left them two points short of safety. As per talkSPORT, the relegation could trigger a clause in Nuno’s contract allowing the club to terminate his deal without paying compensation.
Valette vents anger at the drop
Immediately after the relegation was confirmed, Valette took to Instagram to post several strongly worded messages directed at both Nuno and former manager Graham Potter. Recalling the team’s fall from their European trophy-winning heights under David Moyes, she captioned an old photo: “From a trophy to relegation. Thank you Potter for the start of the season and Nuno for the end.”
Team selection decisions criticised
Areola was relegated to the role of second-choice goalkeeper by Potter in August, before Nuno reinstated him briefly, only to drop him again in January after a series of costly mistakes. Valette also shared statistics showing her husband’s league-best save percentage, shedding light on what she described as poor internal communication within the club.
She wrote: “Being dropped at the beginning of the season for no reason... After a very bad start then has made 20 games and all of a sudden ‘I’m really sorry you won’t start...’. ‘Why?’ ‘For no particular reason but I’m sorry’.”
Uncertain future ahead
The family’s disappointment deepened when France manager Didier Deschamps omitted the experienced goalkeeper from his World Cup squad, choosing Mike Maignan, Robin Risser, and Brice Samba instead. Valette ended her post by stating: “And NO World Cup this year thank you coach Nuno.”
Areola, who has not featured in the Premier League since a match against Chelsea on January 31, now faces an uncertain future with only one year left on his West Ham contract, as the club prepares for a challenging rebuild in the Championship.
