Stock Market Closed: Market fell for the second day due to selling in energy, bank shares; Sensex fell 142 points

Mumbai. In volatile trading, BSE Sensex fell 142 points for the second consecutive day on Wednesday, while NSE Nifty fell marginally by six points. The market remained in loss due to cautious attitude of investors amid ongoing uncertainty in West Asia and fresh capital withdrawal by foreign institutional investors. BSE Sensex based on 30 shares fell 141.90 points or 0.19 percent to close at 75,867.80 points.

Of the Sensex stocks, 20 were in the rise, while 10 were in the decline. During trading, the Sensex reached a high of 76,224.68 points and reached a low of 75,748.21 points. Overall it fluctuated by 476.47 points. NSE Nifty based on fifty shares stood at 23,907.15 points with a slight decline of 6.55 points or 0.03 percent.

Among the Sensex stocks, HDFC Bank, Infosys, ITC, Hindustan Unilever, Reliance Industries and ICICI Bank were the major losers. On the other hand, the profitable stocks include Power Grid, Eternal, NTPC and Tata Steel. Global oil benchmark Brent crude fell 3.24 percent to US$96.35 per barrel.

Ponmudi R, chief executive officer (CEO) of online trading company Enrich Money, said, “The Indian stock market remained largely subdued as investors adopted a wait-and-see approach amid the West Asia uncertainty.” He said, “Although signs of continued diplomatic talks between the US and Iran helped stabilize the market sentiment and limit aggressive selling pressure, the lack of any concrete breakthrough kept the risk appetite limited.”

Elsewhere in Asia, South Korea’s Kospi and Japan’s Nikkei closed with gains, while China’s Shanghai SSE Composite and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng closed with losses. There was a bullish trend in the major markets of Europe in afternoon trading. US markets closed mostly with gains on Tuesday. According to stock market data, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold shares worth Rs 2,407.87 crore on Tuesday. The Sensex fell 479.26 points to close at 76,009.70 on Tuesday. Nifty was in loss of 118 points.
