Despite a recent dip in form, Manchester City have shown faith in Phil Foden by offering him a new long-term contract.
Manchester City are in the process of reshaping their squad to maintain dominance in both English and European football.
Out of the 11 players who started in the 3-3 Premier League draw against Everton on Monday night, seven have either joined or made their debut for the club within the last two seasons. Manager Pep Guardiola is clearly evolving the side that achieved four consecutive league titles and an unprecedented Treble between 2021 and 2024.
Last season marked only the second time since Guardiola’s arrival in 2016 that the club ended a campaign without silverware. However, City have already lifted the Carabao Cup this season, reached the FA Cup final, and remain in contention for the Premier League crown.
The club’s push for renewal has seen the exit of several key figures from their golden era, including Ederson, Kyle Walker, Ilkay Gundogan, and Kevin De Bruyne, who all departed last summer.
However, one player who has seen his influence wane since playing a major role in City’s 2024 title triumph looks set to stay at the Etihad for the foreseeable future.
According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Phil Foden has agreed in principle to a new four-year contract with Manchester City. The midfielder’s current deal was set to expire next summer, but the proposed extension would keep him at the club until 2030, with an option for an additional year.
Foden, a product of City’s academy system, is now 25 and first appeared under Guardiola at the age of 17. Since then, he has scored 110 goals in 365 appearances, collecting six Premier League titles, five Carabao Cups, two FA Cups, and a Champions League winner’s medal.
In the 2023/24 season, Foden’s outstanding performances earned him the PFA Players’ Player of the Year and the Premier League Player of the Season awards after recording 26 goals and 13 assists across all competitions, helping his boyhood club to another league triumph.
However, following a disappointing Euro 2024 campaign with England, Foden has struggled to rediscover his best form and now faces a challenge to secure a spot in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.
The midfielder netted only seven Premier League goals last season and, although he began the current campaign brightly, has not scored since December 14.
England coach Thomas Tuchel started Foden in the March friendlies against Uruguay and Japan but replaced him before the 60-minute mark in both matches after subpar displays.
As the domestic season enters its final stretch, Foden will be hoping this new contract inspires a late surge in form that strengthens his prospects of featuring in England’s World Cup plans under Tuchel.
