The Portugal national football team has emerged as one of the top contenders for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Palangka Raya Deputy Mayor Achmad Zaini among those eagerly anticipating the performance of the man often dubbed ‘the robot’—Cristiano Ronaldo.

Looking at Portugal’s squad, the lineup features prominent names such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Bernardo Silva, Joao Neves, and Vitinha. Under the guidance of Roberto Martinez, Portugal boasts one of the most technically gifted midfields in world football.

Despite being 41 years old, the Selecao will still rely heavily on Ronaldo’s sharp instincts in front of goal. Alongside him, Joao Felix—his teammate at Al Nassr—will play a crucial supporting role.

Other players in the squad are also expected to be key contributors as Portugal faces formidable opponents in their group stage campaign.

Group K Fixtures

Portugal’s opening match against DR Congo is expected to be a comfortable win, but Colombia will pose a serious challenge in their bid to top the group. The South American side, returning after missing out in 2022, could test Portugal’s ambitions.

Portugal’s 2026 World Cup Schedule:

June 17, 2026: Portugal vs DR Congo at NRG Stadium, Houston.
June 23, 2026: Portugal vs Uzbekistan at NRG Stadium, Houston.
June 27, 2026: Colombia vs Portugal at Hard Rock Stadium.

Key Players: Stars Who Will Define Portugal’s Journey

Cristiano Ronaldo

At 41, Ronaldo arrives with 143 international goals and an unrelenting desire to finally lift the World Cup trophy. His leadership and experience remain invaluable, and he continues to be a threat inside the box, having scored 16 goals in the 2025–26 Saudi Pro League season. His two decisive goals in the title-clinching match against Damac reaffirm his ability to deliver when it matters most.

Ronaldo’s age is a legitimate concern, and the competitiveness of the Saudi Pro League remains questioned compared to Europe’s top five leagues. While his scoring numbers are impressive, the quality of opposition he faces may not fully prepare him for the intensity of World Cup knockout rounds.

Bruno Fernandes

Fernandes heads into the tournament in superb form, with 12 goals and 24 assists across all competitions during the 2025–26 season. His hat-trick against Armenia secured Portugal’s qualification and earned him a perfect rating of 10 from WhoScored. As Manchester United’s captain, his leadership and creative vision make him Portugal’s most influential player after Ronaldo.

However, Fernandes has faced criticism for inconsistency at club level and for sometimes holding onto the ball too long in crucial moments, potentially slowing down Portugal’s attacks. His defensive contributions also remain an area of debate, which could be exploited by faster counter-attacking teams.

Bernardo Silva

The Manchester City midfielder has recorded 717 career appearances, 118 goals, and 125 assists. His close control, dribbling, and versatility make him indispensable. In the 2025–26 season, he contributed 4 goals and 6 assists across all competitions.

However, Silva’s defensive contribution is limited, and at 31 years old, he may find the physical demands of a three-week tournament challenging. His tendency to drop deeper at times can also disrupt Portugal’s attacking rhythm.

Vitinha

The PSG midfielder orchestrates Portugal’s tempo, delivering 7 goals and 7 assists in 60 matches during the 2024–25 season. His passing accuracy and vision are vital to Martinez’s possession-based approach. In the 2025–26 Champions League campaign, he added 6 goals and 1 assist.

Vitinha’s lack of physical strength can be a weakness, particularly against teams using high pressing. His defensive positioning also occasionally lacks consistency.

Joao Neves

The 21-year-old PSG prodigy represents the future of Portuguese football. He recorded 10 goals and 4 assists in 38 appearances during the 2025–26 season. His partnership with Vitinha at PSG has been highly successful, and he received a perfect rating of 10 alongside Fernandes in the match against Armenia. In the Champions League, he maintained a passing accuracy of 91.5 percent.

Despite his success at club level, Neves’ place in Portugal’s starting XI remains uncertain due to competition from Rúben Neves and Samu Costa. His limited experience in major tournaments could also pose challenges.

When asked about his favourite players, Zaini admitted he still admires the legendary veterans who have long been icons of the global game—Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Nevertheless, he also hopes the 2026 World Cup will not only showcase established stars but also reveal new talents capable of performing at the highest level.

He believes it is time for the next generation to step up and carry forward the legacy of the sport’s greats.
