ICC bans Cricket Canada from membership for breaching membership obligations
Cricket Gully | June 4, 2026 3:44 AM CST

The International Cricket Council had their board meeting in Ahmedabad on May 30 and 31. After the conclusion of the final day's meeting, the ICC suspended Cricket Canada, effective immediately.

Canada, which was an Associate Member in the ICC, is alleged to have made "serious breaches" of its membership obligations. Despite losing membership, the ICC assured that Canada could still participate in ICC events.

The board can access funding via a controlled mechanism, which will be looked after by the governing body. This is meant to protect the players from any distress caused by the administrative issues.

The ICC further stated that Cricket Canada would receive a list of conditions for reinstatement designed to resolve concerns related to governance and administrative functioning. The organization's progress in meeting these requirements will be reviewed and supervised by the ICC's Normalization Committee.

Canada's long-standing relationship with the ICC

Canada might not be a popular and strong cricket-playing nation like England or Australia, but they have been an ICC member for quite a long time. They were elected as an Associate member all the way back in 1968.

They were part of the 90+ Associate Members, meaning cricket is firmly established and organized in the country, but they do not meet the criteria to be one of the 12 "Full Members" who are eligible to play official Test matches.

Even though they had the status of associate members, they were limited to hosting one-day internationals and T20 internationals.

Canada Cricket: History, Struggles And Future

Canada holds a significant place in cricket history but currently competes as a mid-level Associate nation. Ranked 20th in both ODI and T20I cricket as of June 2026, the team continues to chase consistency against stronger Full Member nations. Canada played the first recorded international cricket match against the USA in 1844 and made its ODI World Cup debut in 1979.

Their most memorable achievement came during the 2003 World Cup, when they stunned Bangladesh in Durban. Canada also qualified for the 2007 and 2011 editions and reached its first Men's T20 World Cup in 2024.

However, recent results have been challenging, including a winless 2026 T20 World Cup campaign. Despite administrative uncertainty, Canada remains active in ICC League 2 and upcoming international fixtures.
