The highly anticipated FIFA World Cup 2026, the world’s largest sporting spectacle, is set to kick off on Friday, June 11 (midnight June 12 in India). The tournament will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. For the first time in history, 48 teams will compete, resulting in an expanded schedule and more matches. Ahead of the tournament, FIFA and the International Football Association Board (IFAB) have introduced several significant rule changes aimed at making the game faster, more disciplined, and more transparent. These rules will debut at the upcoming World Cup.
New Rules for FIFA World Cup 2026
One of the most prominent additions to the rulebook is the prohibition on players covering their mouths with their hands. Any player who hides their face using their hand, jersey, or any other method while arguing with opponents, referees, or officials will be shown a straight red card. FIFA stated that this measure was introduced because some players were using such gestures to conceal discriminatory or offensive comments.
Video Assistant Referee (VAR) intervention has also been expanded. If a referee makes an incorrect decision, such as awarding a wrong corner kick or issuing an unjust second yellow card, VAR can overrule the call. Additionally, VAR can now review potential fouls committed before corner kicks, penalties, or throw-ins.
Another major change involves game restarts. After a throw-in or goal, the goalkeeper or player has just five seconds to resume play. If the time limit is exceeded, the opposing team will be awarded a corner kick or throw-in. This five-second countdown rule is designed to prevent time-wasting and ensure continuous play.
Substitution procedures have also been tightened. Once the substitution board is displayed, players must leave the pitch within 10 seconds. Failure to do so will result in the substitute being kept off the field for one minute. This rule ensures quick player changes and minimizes delays.
For injuries, a new one-minute rule has been introduced. If a player is injured during a match, they must remain off the field for at least one minute before re-entering, allowing time for recovery. Goalkeepers and players with serious injuries are exempt from this rule. Additionally, a mandatory three-minute hydration break will take place around the 22nd minute of each half to help players manage physical exertion.
In cases where a player leaves the field in protest against a referee’s decision or for any unrelated reason, the entire team may face disciplinary action, potentially receiving a red card as a collective penalty.
Furthermore, if a goalkeeper is being attended to by medical staff due to injury, no player from either team will be allowed to approach the dugout or interact with coaching personnel during that period.
These newly introduced FIFA regulations are intended to make the 2026 World Cup more efficient, disciplined, and free from unnecessary disputes.
