The announcement of jersey numbers for England's national football team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup has drawn public attention, as many believe it offers early clues about coach Thomas Tuchel’s tactical approach and preferred starting lineup.

The 2026 World Cup, which will be the first edition featuring 48 participating nations, is scheduled to kick off on 12 June 2026.

All teams have now unveiled their final 26-man squads, including England, who have assembled one of the most star-studded lineups in the tournament.

After the squad lists were confirmed, jersey numbers became a key talking point, often seen as indicators of a coach’s tactical intentions and potential starting eleven.

For England, Marcus Rashford has been handed the iconic No.11 shirt, traditionally associated with a key attacking role for the Three Lions.

Harry Kane retains his No.9 shirt, Jude Bellingham keeps the No.10, and Jordan Pickford continues as the first-choice goalkeeper wearing No.1.

These number assignments have sparked speculation about England’s possible starting XI, given that numbers 1 through 11 are typically worn by first-choice players in most teams.

Meanwhile, players such as Anthony Gordon and Morgan Rogers received higher numbers, suggesting they may still be competing for regular starting positions.

However, jersey numbers alone do not guarantee starting spots, as final selections will depend on performance levels, fitness, and tactical considerations in the lead-up to each match.

With a roster filled with top European talents, England remains one of the favourites to win the 2026 World Cup.

According to Opta’s predictions, England are among the strongest contenders, holding a 10.92 percent chance of lifting the trophy.

This probability places England as the third most likely team to win, behind Spain (16.23 percent) and France (12.84 percent).

Arnan Binafsihi, Deputy Chairman of Oranje Indonesia, also agrees that England are among the top favourites for the 2026 World Cup title.

“If we look at the likely champions, they’ll come from the top 10 of the FIFA rankings,” Arnan Binafsihi said during a podcast with Tribunnews.

“Teams like Spain, France, England, Portugal, Brazil, Argentina, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany are all strong contenders. Maybe except for Morocco, even though they are in the FIFA top 10,” he added.

With the squad numbers now confirmed, England’s focus shifts to final preparations through warm-up matches and training sessions before facing Croatia, Ghana, and Panama in Group L of the 2026 World Cup.

The Three Lions will first play friendly matches against New Zealand on 7 June and Costa Rica on 11 June, before kicking off their World Cup campaign against Croatia on 18 June.
