Huang, the world’s eighth-richest person with an estimated net worth at US$176 billion according to Forbes, visited Seoul on June 5, seven months after attracting public attention here for a casual fried chicken dinner with executives from Samsung Electronics and Hyundai Motor Group, The Korea Herald reported.
During his latest trip, Huang dined with Chey Tae-won, chairman of SK Group; Koo Kwang-mo, chairman of LG Group; and Lee Hae-jin of tech company Naver.
The group met at Hyeongnim Jeoyo, which translates to “Brother, It’s Me,” a choice reminiscent of last year’s gathering at a Kkanbu Chicken restaurant, Korea Joongang Daily reported.
During the meal, Huang reportedly raised a glass of “somaek” — a popular mix of soju and beer — and toasted, saying, “Go Korea, go SK, go LG, and go Naver.”
Hyeongnim Jeoyo, a popular, authentic Korean BBQ restaurant in Seoul’s Hongdae District, is famous for its high-quality, reasonably priced meats and its vibrant, local K-BBQ atmosphere.
Dipping green chili peppers into ssamjang — a thick, spicy-sweet soybean paste — and wrapping grilled pork, scallions, and kimchi in a perilla leaf for a hearty bite is a familiar ritual at Korean barbecue gatherings, particularly among middle-aged men, known in Korean as ajeossi.
After dinner, Huang and the South Korean business leaders handed out bottles of banana milk, a popular Korean dairy drink, and bungee corda fish-shaped pastry traditionally filled with sweet red bean paste, to onlookers who had gathered outside to catch a glimpse of the high-profile meeting.
