The curious incident took place on the red carpet of the Desigual Vintage event, a launch party for a new collection by Spanish fashion label Desigual, in Ibiza, Spain, on June 2, according to Page Six.

After Wilson shared her thoughts on the trip with reporters, a journalist asked, “Your father is the greatest person ever, right?”

At first, she appeared not to hear the question clearly. When the reporter repeated it, she turned around and walked away. The interview has been trending on social media, garnering more than three million views on X after being reposted by a user.

Some people said Wilson should not have been asked about a sensitive personal matter, given that she and her father have been publicly estranged for years. The transwoman has been criticized by her father over her gender identity.

Others claimed she should have responded more maturely by giving an honest answer rather than “running away like a child.”

The eldest child of the controversial Musk, the world’s richest person, and his first wife, novelist Justine Wilson came out as transgender at the age of 16. In 2022, she filed a petition to legally change her name from Xavier Alexander Musk to Vivian Jenna Wilson and have her gender legally recognized as female. She also stated she no longer wished to be to her father “in any way, shape or form.”

Since then, the two have frequently criticized each other through social media and the press. In a 2024 interview, Musk claimed to have been “tricked” into signing documents to her gender transition and that he had “lost a son.” He continued to refer to her by her former name, Xavier, a practice widely viewed as disrespectful toward transgender people, and said his child had been “killed by the woke mind virus.”

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines “woke” as awareness of and active attention to social issues such as racism, gender inequality, and discrimination against LGBTQ+ communities. Wilson later responded to her father’s remarks, saying he was absent for much of her childhood.

“He doesn’t know what I was like as a child because he quite simply wasn’t there,” she told NBC News in 2024.

“And in the little time that he was I was relentlessly harassed for my femininity and queerness.”

Wilson described her father as “uncaring” and “narcissistic” and said she had no interest in maintaining contact with him.

In an April interview with Cosmopolitanan American women’s magazine, she reflected on growing up as the child of one of the world’s richest men, saying: “It was a very strange experience, very isolating.”

“I remember being very young and seeing homelessness and feeling sick to my stomach. People would get on me for being like a dramatic little child. But no, I was right to be a dramatic little s–t about that.”

Asked if she struggled with constantly being identified as Musk’s daughter, she said there was little she could do about it, and her family background is only one part of her story and does not define her future. Wilson has a twin brother and three younger siblings and eight half-siblings.

In addition to modeling, Wilson is also a cultural commentator and transgender rights advocate. She lives in Los Angeles and earns most of her income through modeling.

She began gaining prominence in the fashion industry after appearing on the cover of Teen Vogue in January 2025 and has since received numerous partnership opportunities, including work with Rihanna’s lingerie brand Savage X Fenty.
