Rajasthan’s 23-year-old left arm spinner Manav Suthar has created history in the only Test match being played against Afghanistan at the Maharaja Yadvinder Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur. Manav registered his name in the record books by taking a wicket on just the fourth ball of his international career.
In this match, India declared its first innings at 564/8, thanks to the brilliant centuries of KL Rahul and captain Shubman Gill. After this, to stop the Afghanistan team from chasing the mountain of runs, Captain Gill handed the ball into the hands of Manav Suthar in the sixth over itself. Manav also did not let his captain’s trust go waste and on the fourth ball of the over, Abdul Malik was caught by Mohammad Siraj at short fine leg and shown the way to the pavilion.
Why did the parents leave the field and return home?
On one hand, Manav’s first international wicket was being celebrated on the field, while on the other hand, his parents silently left for home after seeing their son getting the test cap. According to a PTI report, Manav’s parents and sister did not stay at Mullanpur Stadium to watch the next match due to superstition. On Sunday, the second day of the Test, Manav’s father Jagdish Suthar said, ‘Yes, I, my wife and daughter Mansi (Manav’s younger sister) had come to watch his debut match. When he got the test cap yesterday, it is difficult to describe that moment in words. But today (Sunday) we returned home because we all were very nervous. When we sit on the field and watch him play live, we become a little superstitious.
The interesting thing is whether this trick of the parents or superstition, it worked. By the end of the second day’s play, Afghanistan had lost 5 wickets for just 113 runs, out of which Manav Suthar alone took 3 wickets. Afghanistan team is still 451 runs behind India.
Superstition of human parents got air
Manav Suthar made his test debut. He took a total of 7 wickets in this match. Manav Suthar bowled brilliantly during Afghanistan’s first innings. He single-handedly destroyed the Afghan batting. Manav Suthar took 6 wickets during Afghanistan’s first innings. With this, he became the 10th Indian bowler to take 5 wickets in an innings on Test debut. Apart from Manav Suthar, Prasidh Krishna took 3 wickets and Washington Sundar took 1 wicket.
The Indian team has defeated Afghanistan (IND vs AFG) in the only test. India defeated Afghanistan by 1 innings and 300 runs, which is the biggest victory of Team India in Test cricket history. The young Indian team under the captaincy of Shubman Gill won the test match in just 3 days.
This unique record was made after 25 years
By taking the wicket of Abdul Malik, Manav Suthar has become the eighth Indian bowler to take a wicket in his very first over of Test debut. Before him, Montu Banerjee (vs West Indies, 1948), Manohar Hardikar (vs West Indies, 1958), Waman Kumar (vs Pakistan, 1961), Chetan Sharma (vs Pakistan, 1984), WV Raman (vs West Indies, 1988), Nilesh Kulkarni (vs Sri Lanka, 1997) and Tinu Yohana (vs England, 2001). Have accomplished the feat. This achievement of Manav is also special because this record for India has been made after a long drought of 25 years. The last time in 2001, Tinu Yohana had dismissed England’s opener Mark Butcher in his debut over. The interesting thing is that Johanna also took a wicket on her fourth ball.
