Liverpool transfer news: Andoni Iraola could secure remarkable free signing as his first addition for the Reds

Liverpool are undergoing a major transition this summer, with the latest departure being Ibrahima Konate, who appears set for a move to Real Madrid.

Following the exits of club icons Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson at the end of the 2025/26 season, the Reds could soon see a familiar face return under their new manager, Andoni Iraola.

The Spanish coach, embarking on his debut season at Anfield, will spend much of his time addressing the issues left behind by former boss Arne Slot. While there are clear gaps in the squad, a potential reunion transfer could simplify his rebuilding process.

Darwin Nunez, brought to Liverpool by Jurgen Klopp in the summer of 2022 for a hefty fee that he struggled to justify, might be on the verge of a surprise return to Merseyside.

As reported by TEAMtalk, the Uruguayan forward has been offered to a select group of clubs as a free agent, with Liverpool emerging as one of the key contenders interested in his signature.

Nunez, whose time at Liverpool is remembered for its inconsistency despite ending with a Premier League title, recently joined the Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal.

He signed for Al-Hilal at the beginning of the 2025/26 season and netted nine goals in 24 matches before being dropped from the squad due to the league’s foreign player restrictions.

His last match for the Saudi club was in February, when he scored twice in a 2-1 AFC Champions League Elite win over Al-Wahda. Following that, his contract with Al-Hilal was mutually terminated, allowing him to explore new opportunities.

Now, Nunez is evaluating his next move ahead of the summer transfer window, with his former club Benfica reportedly set to rival Liverpool for his signature.

According to the same report, rumours in Spain suggest that the 26-year-old has already agreed in principle to a return to Anfield, potentially joining as a free agent with no transfer fee involved.

Liverpool supporters, however, will not be surprised to learn that Nunez’s finishing woes continued abroad, with the striker scoring just six league goals despite posting an expected goals (xG) tally of 11.48.

During his spell under Jurgen Klopp, Nunez scored 11 goals but missed 27 Big Chances in the 2023/24 Premier League season, following a debut campaign where he found the net nine times but missed 20 Big Chances.

With Iraola confronting a shortage of forward options ahead of his first campaign in charge, a reunion with the 26-year-old attacker could prove to be a cost-effective and practical solution.

Even as a rotational player, Nunez remains an xG powerhouse capable of generating opportunities through his sharp movement, even if his conversion rate remains inconsistent.

With Hugo Ekitike sidelined long-term after his serious injury against PSG last season, and considering Iraola’s high-intensity, attack-focused system that could complement Nunez’s playing style, a Liverpool return might be more advantageous for both sides than initially anticipated.
