Mason Greenwood has reportedly finalised personal terms with Roma, signalling a major development in the Serie A club’s pursuit of the Marseille forward. Although the two clubs have not yet settled on a transfer fee, Roma have moved ahead as frontrunners to sign the 24-year-old after Fenerbahce’s interest diminished following recent events in Turkey.

Roma take a lead in the Greenwood chase

According to reports, Roma have made significant progress in their attempt to sign Greenwood by securing an agreement on personal terms with the Marseille attacker. As per Corriere dello Sport, the 24-year-old has approved a transfer to the Stadio Olimpico. The proposed deal reportedly includes a gradually increasing salary structure, starting with a net pay of €4 million accompanied by performance-related bonuses.

Roma’s ownership group is determined to reinforce the squad and considers Greenwood a key target for their attacking lineup. However, the transfer remains incomplete. Marseille are believed to value the player at around €55 million, while Roma are preparing to submit an initial offer in the range of €40 million.

Negotiations continue between Roma and Marseille

While Greenwood has agreed to personal terms, discussions between Roma and Marseille are still ongoing as both sides look to reach a consensus on the transfer fee. Marseille face financial strain and possible doubts over their participation in next season’s Europa League, which could push them towards agreeing to a sale.

Despite Greenwood’s strong showing in Ligue 1, the circumstances have increased the chances of a transfer. Reports also indicate that the forward is preparing for a move, having reportedly handed back the keys to his residence in Aix ahead of a potential departure from France.

Roma become favourites for Greenwood

Earlier in the summer, Fenerbahce were seen as the most probable destination for Greenwood. The Turkish side’s interest intensified after presidential candidate Hakan Safi linked his election campaign to a proposed deal for the forward, claiming he had reached an agreement running until 2030.

However, the situation shifted after Aziz Yildirim defeated Safi in the club’s presidential election. With Safi’s proposal no longer in motion, the possibility of a transfer to Istanbul has diminished considerably. This turn of events has given Roma the advantage, positioning them as the leading contenders for Greenwood’s signature as they aim to bolster their attacking depth.

Transfer fee remains the key hurdle

The next step in the process will focus on negotiations between Roma and Marseille. Although Greenwood’s preference for Roma is apparent, the two clubs still need to narrow the gap between Marseille’s valuation and Roma’s offer.

Roma are expected to continue their efforts to lower Marseille’s asking price before pre-season begins. The deal could also have implications for Manchester United, who reportedly included a sell-on clause in Greenwood’s previous transfer agreement, entitling them to a portion of any future sale.
