Kieran Trippier has sealed a free transfer move to Wolverhampton Wanderers after spending four years with Newcastle United. The seasoned England international defender has agreed to a two-year contract at Molineux, marking the first major signing of the summer for manager Rob Edwards as Wolves aim for a swift return to the Premier League.

The 35-year-old right-back adds vast top-level experience to the squad following his key role in Newcastle’s transformation from relegation contenders to Champions League qualifiers. A native of Bury, Trippier came through Manchester City’s academy, achieved Premier League promotion with Burnley, and later represented Tottenham Hotspur and Atletico Madrid. The former England star, with 54 caps to his name, now steps into the Championship to help Wolves bounce back from their recent relegation.

Head coach Rob Edwards expressed his delight at securing the club’s top defensive target before pre-season begins. “I’m really happy to have him here. When we met, it was clear he genuinely wanted to join Wolves,” said Edwards.

“We know exactly what we lacked this season and what we’ll need next year – experience, leadership, resilience, and strong personalities. Trippier ticks all those boxes. From quality and know-how to his hunger to succeed, he embodies everything we’re looking for. He’s determined to help us win promotion again, which is something we’re all striving for.”

“He had other good options, so getting this deal done is a huge success for us. It shows the stature of this club. We’re an attractive destination, and following the Andre news, I don’t think we could have asked for a better start to our summer plans.”

The Wolves hierarchy considers Trippier’s arrival a major signal of intent for the demanding Championship season ahead. Executive Chairman Nathan Shi commented: “Kieran has competed at the highest level throughout his career, and we’re thrilled he’s chosen Wolves for the next chapter.”

“His quality, leadership, and winning mentality are exceptional. With his Premier League, Champions League, and international experience, he will bring immense value to our squad. The Championship will be a tough challenge, but Kieran’s signing underlines our ambition. We’re eager to see him bring his professionalism, character, and high standards to help drive the club forward.”

Technical Director Matt Jackson added: “We’re delighted to welcome Kieran to Wolves. This has been a great collaborative effort between Rob, Nathan, and myself, and Kieran has fully embraced the project.”

“He was our top target, and getting him through the door early in the window, so he can take part in pre-season from day one, was crucial. His commitment to Wolves reflects the appeal of this club – both for supporters and everyone working behind the scenes – to attract someone with his career pedigree.”

Trippier will link up with his new teammates on the first day of pre-season training next month. Following last season’s relegation setback, Wolves will need to quickly adjust to the demanding 46-game Championship schedule.

Pairing Trippier with Andre – who recently extended his contract until June 2030 despite external interest – provides Rob Edwards with a strong foundation to establish high standards as the club prepares for the new campaign.
