The future of Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero remains uncertain as speculation continues over his potential exit from north London, though Manchester United are not expected to pursue a deal this summer despite recent reports suggesting otherwise.

The Argentine defender’s stay at Spurs has been in question for some time, having shown interest in leaving last summer when Atletico Madrid made an approach. The La Liga side were again believed to be keen this year, but they now reportedly face competition from Manchester United.

On Monday evening, Argentine journalist Gaston Edul, known to have close connections with Romero, claimed that United were “preparing an offer” for the Spurs skipper. However, both the Press Association and BBC Sport have since reported that Romero is not among the targets for Michael Carrick’s side during the current transfer window.

Whether Tottenham decide to part ways with their captain this summer remains to be seen. Over the past two seasons, Romero has been outspoken about the club’s leadership following two consecutive disappointing Premier League campaigns that saw Spurs finish 17th in successive seasons.

The World Cup-winning defender almost missed Tottenham’s crucial final-day match that determined their Premier League survival, reportedly prioritising the final of the Argentine Championship between his boyhood club Belgrano and River Plate. In the days before Tottenham’s decisive fixture, Belgrano’s social media channels featured Romero at their training ground, assisting with football drills. However, he returned to north London in time to witness Spurs avoid relegation on the final day of the season.

Tottenham have already begun reinforcing their defence this summer, with centre-backs Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke identified as key transfer targets. Senesi is expected to join from Bournemouth on a free transfer, while Spurs are preparing a third bid for Van Hecke after Brighton rejected their first two offers.

Van Hecke is reportedly open to reuniting with his former manager Roberto De Zerbi, with whom he worked at Brighton. Additionally, teenage prodigy Luka Vuskovic is set to return from a successful loan spell with Hamburg, where his performances earned him a spot in the Bundesliga Team of the Season.

Vuskovic, who is expected to feature in this summer’s World Cup, is considered ready to compete for first-team minutes at Tottenham next season. However, he has openly expressed his wish to play alongside his brother Mario Vuskovic at Hamburg, who is due to return from a doping suspension in November.
