With just under a week to go before the transfer window opens, Manchester United have already started their summer business with intent, as INEOS prepare for a significant restructuring of Michael Carrick’s squad.
The Red Devils are set to undergo a major midfield overhaul this summer, following Casemiro’s confirmed exit and the possibility of Manuel Ugarte being sold if the club can find a suitable buyer.
This leaves Kobbie Mainoo as the only central midfielder at Old Trafford considered to have a long-term future, with Bruno Fernandes now reinstated in his preferred No.10 role.
United also plan to strengthen the left side of the pitch — at either full-back or on the wing — as well as add depth in goal and attack. However, rectifying the midfield remains their top priority.
The club has reportedly finalised a £39 million agreement with Atalanta for Brazilian midfielder Ederson, beating competition from Atletico Madrid and other Serie A clubs.
Negotiations are also ongoing for West Ham’s young talent Mateus Fernandes, although the Hammers’ steep asking price — said to be around £85 million — is proving difficult to meet. The 21-year-old Portuguese international is understood to be open to the move, viewing United captain Bruno Fernandes as a personal role model.
Several other midfield options are also under evaluation, including Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali, Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton and Joao Gomes, as United explore the market for suitable alternatives.
Among the names on United’s radar is Bournemouth’s 22-year-old playmaker Alex Scott.
The England Under-21 international has been a standout performer under Andoni Iraola, playing a pivotal role in helping the Cherries qualify for Europe for the first time in their 127-year history.
A technically gifted and versatile midfielder, Scott is known for linking up play and executing his manager’s high-pressing tactics. His qualities have earned praise from Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, who described him as an “unbelievable player.”
Bournemouth are determined to prevent another mass departure of key players following last summer’s defensive clear-out, which saw four of their backline members leave. Antoine Semenyo’s £65 million move to Manchester City in January only strengthened their resolve to retain their stars.
Scott, who joined Bournemouth from Bristol City in 2023 for £25 million, still has two years left on his current contract at the Vitality Stadium. Talks are underway regarding an extension, though the midfielder is reportedly keeping his options open.
Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are both monitoring the Guernsey-born talent, but Liverpool are now believed to be leading the chase after appointing Iraola as their new manager, following Arne Slot’s dismissal after a disappointing season.
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Bournemouth have placed an £80 million price tag on Scott to deter potential buyers while also preparing a new contract offer that could include a release clause.
Jacobs revealed: “Understand Bournemouth value Alex Scott at around £80m and plan to offer the midfielder a new deal. Yet Liverpool and Manchester United have Scott on their radar. Spurs also hold appreciation. Bournemouth owner Bill Foley is intent on keeping Scott with hope he’ll sign a new contract, likely with a release clause. This was the case when Antoine Semenyo extended last summer.”
Scott is highly regarded by United’s hierarchy, with Michael Carrick thought to be an admirer, having come up against him during his time managing Middlesbrough in the Championship. While United have made initial enquiries, their attention currently appears focused elsewhere.
If contract talks between Scott and Bournemouth break down and the player pushes for a move, United could revisit their interest. However, Bournemouth’s £80 million valuation is expected to be a major obstacle that few clubs, if any, will be willing to meet.
