Liverpool are intensifying their efforts to find a successor to their Egyptian superstar on Merseyside.
The club have reportedly identified RB Leipzig’s young sensation Yan Diomande as a potential replacement for Mohamed Salah, following confirmation that the forward will depart at the end of the 2025-26 season.
Mohamed Salah will leave the Reds as their all-time leading Premier League scorer and the third-highest goalscorer in the club’s overall history. His achievements include leading Liverpool to their second Premier League title last season.
The Egyptian forward produced one of the most remarkable individual seasons in English football, winning the Golden Boot, the Playmaker Award, and the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award, all alongside his Premier League triumph. The challenge now for Liverpool is how to replace such an extraordinary figure.
Mohamed Salah will depart having claimed the most Golden Boots in Premier League history, tied on four with Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, and holding the record for the most PFA Players’ Player of the Year awards, with three wins in 2017/18, 2021/22, and 2024/25.
Additionally, Salah twice captured the Premier League Playmaker Award, introduced in 2017 to honour the top assister in the league. He also equalled Thierry Henry’s record for the most open-play assists in a single Premier League season, achieving 18 during his 2024/25 campaign.
Replacing such a monumental talent may appear impossible—Salah was ranked No.5 in FourFourTwo’s list of the greatest Premier League players of all time—but Liverpool believe they might already have a plan.
According to a report from CaughtOffside, Liverpool are targeting RB Leipzig’s highly rated youngster Yan Diomande as their ideal signing.
Diomande, who was recently featured in FourFourTwo’s ‘The Boy’s A Bit Special’ series, has registered 16 goal involvements in 27 Bundesliga appearances this season. The 19-year-old averages 3.3 successful dribbles per match, offering blistering pace and creativity from the wing.
The report suggests Liverpool will face stiff competition from Arsenal for Diomande’s signature. However, Champions League qualification is expected to play a decisive role in determining the player’s next destination.
With Liverpool’s hopes of securing a top-four finish fading, Arsenal could have the upper hand in the race for the talented winger. Nevertheless, Liverpool’s chances received a boost after Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Sporting Lisbon confirmed that a fifth-place Premier League finish will guarantee Champions League football for the 2026-27 season.
Under Arne Slot, Liverpool still have crucial away fixtures against Manchester United and Everton, as well as challenging games against Aston Villa, Chelsea, and Brentford—teams all vying for top-five positions.
Even if Liverpool manage to qualify, Diomande will not come cheap. Reports indicate that RB Leipzig believe they can command a fee exceeding €100 million for their prized asset.
The Ivorian teenager also faced Mohamed Salah earlier this season, when Ivory Coast lost 3-2 to Egypt in the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final—a match in which Salah scored and provided an assist.
Liverpool are also competing in the Champions League this season and could secure automatic qualification for next year’s tournament by winning it outright. They face Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-final clash later this evening.
