Following the heartbreak of back-to-back group stage exits in the previous two World Cups, Leon Goretzka has promised that Germany will set things right in the upcoming tournament.
“We want to make amends this summer. The memories of the last two World Cups don’t trouble us anymore,” the 31-year-old midfielder said in a recent conversation with FIFA.com.
“It’s true that the fans’ trust in us has wavered a bit, and we really want to win them back. That’s the biggest source of motivation for me and for the entire squad.
“We may not be counted among the top favourites, to be honest. But as Germany, a major footballing nation, there are always high expectations surrounding us.
“We have several world-class players, and if everyone stays fit, we can accomplish great things at the World Cup. If we manage to grow together as a unit throughout the competition, then anything is possible,” he continued.
Julian Nagelsmann’s team will start their campaign in the World Cup hosted across the USA, Canada, and Mexico, with their opening Group E match against Curaçao scheduled to kick off at 19:00 CET.
