Marco Silva, the former manager of Fulham, has officially been named the new head coach of Benfica, succeeding Jose Mourinho, as announced by the club. Silva has signed a two-year contract with an option for an additional year, marking his return to coaching in Portugal after spending several years in England.
In his last role at Fulham, Silva led the team from the Championship to the Premier League in his first season and established them as a consistent mid-table team in the top tier of English football. Although Fulham had offered him a new contract to keep him, Silva chose to return to his homeland after a decade of managing in England, where he also had stints with Hull City, Everton, and Watford.
Silva now takes charge of a Benfica team that finished third in the Primeira Liga last season, remaining unbeaten but finishing eight points behind Porto and two points behind Sporting CP.
