Liverpool star Mohamed Salah is reportedly on the verge of completing a move to Turkish giants Fenerbahce following Aziz Yildirim’s victory in the club’s presidential election.
The Egyptian forward bid farewell to Liverpool at the close of the Premier League season, bringing an end to nine remarkable years at Anfield filled with goals and trophies.
During his time with Liverpool, Salah scored an impressive 257 goals in 442 appearances across all competitions. However, after managing only 12 goals in 41 matches this season, it became increasingly clear that his tenure with the Reds was nearing its conclusion.
Tensions rose in December after a heated exchange between Salah and manager Arne Slot, sparking rumours that the 2025-26 campaign could be his last. Those reports were confirmed in March when Salah officially announced his decision to leave the club.
While speculation initially linked the 31-year-old with a lucrative move to the Saudi Pro League, recent developments suggest a transfer to Turkey may now be on the cards.
Speaking during his campaign, Fenerbahce presidential candidate Aziz Yildirim told reporters about Salah’s potential arrival: “He would ask for a three-year contract, and the total cost would be 90 million Euros (£77m). If he is our urgent need, we will sign him! Our football committee will decide on these matters.”
With Yildirim now confirmed as the new Fenerbahce president, attention turns to whether he will follow through on his bold pledge to bring the Egyptian superstar to Istanbul.
Ertan Torunogullari, who served as director of football under former president Sadettin Saran, has claimed that Salah is “very keen” on making the switch to Fenerbahce.
Torunogullari explained: “He (Salah) was very eager to come to Türkiye. The meetings he had with us were extremely positive. We had reached common ground on many aspects, including his salary. If the new administration makes such a request, I believe Salah will wear the Fenerbahce jersey. We would be delighted to assist the new management in negotiations.”
Former Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren also shared his thoughts, suggesting Salah might have chosen to stay at Anfield had he known that manager Arne Slot would be dismissed.
Lovren said in an interview with Middle Eastern outlet WinWin: “I don’t think it’s the management; I think it’s just one person, and that’s the manager. They didn’t have a good relationship, to put it simply. With (Jurgen) Klopp, he had a really good relationship. It wasn’t always perfect, but they knew each other well, they trusted each other, and Klopp gave Mo the freedom he needed on the pitch, while Mo repaid that faith with performances.”
He added: “With Slot, it was the opposite. Everyone knows it. For eight or nine seasons, he performed brilliantly. People might say he also did well in Slot’s first year, but that was because the team was already in place. It’s sad that Mo left in such circumstances—I never expected it, especially since he still had another year on his contract.”
