Manchester United have dismissed recent speculation linking them with a move for Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero, asserting that their current recruitment priorities lie elsewhere.

As per TEAMtalk, sources close to the club have clarified that United are not actively pursuing Romero despite the reports emerging from Argentina overnight, which suggested that the Red Devils were preparing to capitalise on uncertainty surrounding his future at Spurs.

Instead, United’s attention has shifted towards strengthening other areas of the squad. One of their key targets is Newcastle United’s young left-back Lewis Hall, who has caught the eye with his performances over recent seasons.

The 21-year-old is reportedly enthusiastic about the prospect of joining Old Trafford, viewing it as a significant step forward in his career. The lure of regular UEFA Champions League football is understood to be a major factor for Hall, who featured in the competition for Newcastle during the past campaign.

According to reports, United have already made initial contact regarding Hall, though no formal negotiations have begun as yet. However, any potential deal is expected to be costly. Newcastle, having recently secured around £69 million from Anthony Gordon’s transfer to Barcelona, are under no financial pressure to sell. The Magpies are believed to value Hall at more than £60 million, which would make him one of the more expensive full-back options in the summer transfer window.

In addition to targeting a left-back, United are also looking to bolster their midfield options. The club has re-established contact with West Ham United over Portuguese international Mateus Fernandes. This approach is said to reflect manager Michael Carrick’s determination to add further quality and dynamism to his midfield unit. United are thought to hold a slight advantage over Paris Saint-Germain in the race for Fernandes.

The broader transfer plan at Old Trafford is an ambitious one. The club intends to bring in a new left-back, two or three midfielders, and a striker to provide competition for Benjamin Sesko. A backup goalkeeper to support Senne Lammens is also being considered.

In contrast, United are content with their current central defensive options and are likely to revisit that area later in the window if necessary. For now, their primary focus remains on positions identified as needing immediate attention, which explains why Romero is not currently a priority target.
