Tottenham Hotspur have moved swiftly in the summer transfer market after narrowly avoiding relegation from the Premier League last season.
Argentine centre-back Marcos Senesi will officially join Spurs on a free transfer from Bournemouth on July 1, once his contract with the south coast club expires.
Senesi has signed a long-term deal with the north London side, becoming their second confirmed summer recruit. Fellow defender Andy Robertson is also expected to arrive next month on a free transfer following his departure from Liverpool.
The 29-year-old defender has been handed the No.5 jersey at Tottenham, a number last worn by Jan Vertonghen and left vacant after midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg made a permanent move to Marseille last year.
“It’s a very special feeling to become a Tottenham Hotspur player,” Senesi said in an interview with the club’s official website.
“From the very beginning, the club made it clear how much they wanted me and how strongly they believe I can be part of what they’re building. It’s an exciting opportunity, and I can’t wait to get started.
“Every time I step onto the pitch, I’ll give my all to make the fans proud and help bring the club back to where it belongs. My goal is to win trophies with Tottenham, and I’ll do everything possible to achieve that.”
Senesi joined Bournemouth from Dutch side Feyenoord in 2022 and made 128 appearances in all competitions. He played a crucial role in helping the team secure a sixth-place finish in the Premier League this season, earning a Europa League spot under then-manager Andoni Iraola, who has since taken over at Liverpool.
Despite receiving several contract extension offers from Bournemouth, Senesi opted not to renew his deal. He had been linked with other Premier League clubs such as Chelsea and Liverpool before Spurs made their move early in a bid to strengthen their squad and avoid another relegation scare.
Tottenham are also actively pursuing transfers for Manchester City winger Savinho and Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke.
Senesi has represented Argentina at the senior level three times but has not been included in the squad for this summer’s World Cup. His signing comes amid ongoing speculation regarding the future of his compatriot and Tottenham captain Cristian Romero.
Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi shared his thoughts on the new arrival, saying: “Marcos’ experience, technical ability, and competitive spirit will enhance our defensive line and provide us with more tactical flexibility.
“He’s comfortable in possession-based football, reads the game exceptionally well, and has the mentality to succeed in a challenging environment.
“I really admire his attitude and his drive to keep improving. I’m excited to work with him and see the significant impact he’ll bring to the team.”
Providing further insight into the club’s decision, Tottenham sporting director Johan Lange said: “Marcos is a defender who combines quality, intelligence, and leadership.
“His experience at the top level, composure under pressure, and determination to fight for every ball make him an ideal fit for our playing style.
“We’re delighted to welcome him to Tottenham and believe he’s joining at a perfect point in his career to make a major contribution.”
