Defense Minister Rajnath Singh shared pictures to the test on June 13, calling it a major achievement for India’s defense preparedness. Along with this, Naval Anti-Ship Missile (Medium Range) was also successfully tested, which has further strengthened the maritime security capability of the country.

What is ICBM and why is it considered a big threat?

Intercontinental Ballistic Missile i.e. ICBM is a missile which has the capability to attack from one continent to another. Usually its range is more than 5,500 kilometers. These missiles return towards the earth after reaching very high altitude and attack their targets at very high speed. Many ICBMs are also capable of carrying nuclear weapons, so they are counted among the most strategic and dangerous weapons in the world.

How does India’s multi-layered BMD system work?

The objective of this defense system is to destroy the enemy missile before it reaches the target. First of all, state-of-the-art radar detects the incoming missile. After this the command center analyzes the threat and the interceptor missile is launched. This interceptor targets and destroys enemy missiles in the air itself.

The biggest feature of this system is its ‘multi-layer’ security. If the first interceptor missile fails to destroy the target, the second defense layer is activated. Due to this, the possibility of enemy missile escaping is greatly reduced.

India in the list of selected countries

According to experts, after this achievement, India has joined the ranks of those few countries which have operational level ballistic missile defense capability. Earlier, such technology was only available to countries like America, Russia, Israel and China. The recent successful test is being considered as a big proof of India’s indigenous defense technology and strategic strength.
