All the host nations have now begun their World Cup journeys, and it’s time for former hosts Qatar to take the field once again.
After their turn as hosts in 2022, Qatar are back for another campaign this summer. They face Switzerland in their Group B opener at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium, with the match scheduled to start at 3pm ET (8pm UK time).
The officials have already played an important role in the 2026 World Cup, and the referee for the Qatar vs Switzerland encounter has now been confirmed.
Said Martinez will take charge of the Qatar vs Switzerland match, marking a landmark moment in his career. The 34-year-old will become the first referee born in Honduras to oversee a World Cup game when he officiates this Group B fixture.
Martinez began his refereeing career at the young age of 18, following in his father’s footsteps. He set a national record as the youngest-ever referee in Honduras’s top division. Over the years, he has officiated in the Concacaf Nations League and notably refereed the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup final between Mexico and the United States.
Nicknamed “El Matematico,” Martinez briefly paused his refereeing career to study mathematics before returning to the sport. Since his return, he has built an impressive record: across 310 matches, he has shown an average of 4.22 yellow cards per game and issued a total of 106 red cards. His statistics place him among the more card-prone referees in the Americas, even in regions known for physical football.
Supporting Martinez on Saturday evening will be his fellow Hondurans Walter Lopez and Christian Ramirez, serving as assistant referees. The fourth official for the contest will be Oshane Nation from Jamaica, while Guillermo Pacheco of Mexico will handle VAR responsibilities.
Switzerland’s national team, managed by Murat Yakin, will be looking to start their campaign strongly under his guidance, while Qatar aim to impress once again on the world stage.
The appointment of Said Martinez is a proud moment for Honduras and a significant milestone in his career as he steps into a major role at the World Cup.
