Toronto: The Canadian football team has created a new history by breaking its losing streak in the FIFA World Cup. Recovering from an early setback, Canada held Bosnia-Herzegovina to a 1-1 draw. This is Canada’s first performance in the total 7 matches played in the history of the Football World Cup, where the team has managed to score points.
The Toronto stadium was packed with fans wearing red jerseys. Famous Canadian hockey star Connor McDavid along with Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Mike Myers were also present in the audience to cheer for their team.
Jovo Lukic gives Bosnia early lead
The beginning of the match was no less than a shock for the Canadian fans. In the 21st minute of the game, Bosnia-Herzegovina’s Jovo Lukich created silence in the stadium by scoring a brilliant header on a corner kick.
Actually, due to star players Edin Dzeko (shoulder injury) and Haris Tabakovic being unfit, Lukic got a chance in the starting playing eleven, which he proved right. After this goal, Bosnia maintained a 1-0 lead till the first half.
Syl Larin became ‘Super Sub’, created a stir as soon as he came on the field
Even after falling behind by one goal, Canadian players and fans did not lose courage. In the second half, Canada’s head coach Jesse Marsh played a big gamble. He fielded star player Cyle Larin, who usually plays in the starting lineup, as a substitute in the 76th minute.
Just 2 minutes after stepping on the field (78th minute), Larin put Promise David’s excellent pass into the goal post. With this goal the entire stadium echoed with slogans of ‘Go Canada’.
It’s an amazing feeling to score a goal in hometown: Larin
After the match, Cille Larin expressed his joy, saying, “Scoring a goal in my own hometown and celebrating with the fans in this magical atmosphere is an unforgettable feeling for me.”
32 year drought ends, Canada’s second World Cup goal
The goal was only Canada’s second goal in World Cup history. Earlier, in the World Cup held in 1986 (Mexico) and four years ago in Qatar, Canada had lost all its matches. Coach Jesse Marsh said that the tremendous enthusiasm of the spectators in the second half had filled a new enthusiasm within the players.
On the other hand, the coach of the Bosnian team, which is playing its second World Cup after 2014, Sergei Barbarez also seemed satisfied with this draw. He said, “There was a lot of pressure on Canada’s home ground, but the way our team fought back is commendable.”
Now there will be a clash with Qatar and Switzerland
Now the path of both the teams is going to be very exciting in the next matches of the group stage.
Bosnia-Herzegovina: On June 18, they will face Switzerland in Los Angeles and on June 24, they will face Qatar in Seattle.
Canada: Will take the field against Qatar in Vancouver on 18th June and against Switzerland on 24th June.
