Brazilian football expert Tim Vickery offered a blistering critique of Brazil’s performance during the first 45 minutes of their World Cup 2026 opener.

Brazil began their World Cup campaign with an uneasy first half against Morocco, yet somehow reached the interval level at 1-1. Speaking at half-time on the BBC, Vickery pulled no punches in his analysis.

The seasoned journalist explained in detail why Carlo Ancelotti’s team struggled so badly, as the Italian coach made two substitutions at the break in an effort to steady the ship.

“This is precisely why Brazil are so dangerous: how many teams can be that bad and still be in the game?” Vickery remarked. “They're playing Whack-A-Mole: Vinicius Jr is covering over the cracks.”

He continued, “They’re light in midfield, there’s nothing coming from the right flank, so Raphinha keeps drifting over to that side. They’re trying to find answers as the match progresses.”

Vickery added, “You can never rule out Brazil — their individual brilliance can always turn a game.”

Manager Carlo Ancelotti drew attention with his team selection, naming Roger Ibanez and Douglas Santos as full-backs and giving Brentford striker Igor Thiago a start in the centre-forward role.

The lineup immediately came under pressure as Morocco dominated the early stages, pushing the Selecao deep into their own penalty area and forcing them to defend desperately.

The North African side’s control was so commanding that by the 11th minute, Moroccan fans were chanting ‘Ole’ after every successful pass, mocking Brazil’s inability to get a foothold.

Despite being outplayed, Brazil nearly took the lead against the run of play when Thiago failed to connect with a precise Vinicius Jr cross. Moments later, Morocco struck first when Brahim Diaz’s through ball found Ismael Saibari, who chipped Alisson with a superb lob to make it 1-0.

That goal jolted Brazil into action. Shortly after the hydration break, Vinicius Jr produced a moment of magic to score his first goal of the tournament and bring the Selecao level.

Lucas Paqueta almost added a second when his acrobatic scissor kick forced a save, with the rebound flashing across goal just beyond the reach of waiting Brazilian attackers.

The first half ended with Brazil relieved to still be in contention despite their disjointed display, leaving fans and pundits alike debating whether Ancelotti’s team can find balance and rhythm in the matches ahead.
